Hello List, I have been trying to help my second cousin Avis O'Kane (nee Spurgeon in the UK) to trace her family tree, but seem to have come to a halt at present. Avis says that C.H. Spurgeon was her Great-Grandfather, however I have no verified documentation for this. Concerning CH Spurgeon, I have found out that his father was John Spurgeon, born in Clare, Suffolk. 15 July 1810, and his mother was Eliza, born near to Belchamp Otten on 3 May 1815. They did have 17 children, but 9 died as infants, so there is a possibility that Avis could be related. Apparently Charles H. and his wife Susannah only had twin sons, Charles & Thomas b. 1856. Avis would have to be descended from either Charles or Thomas, however I can find no link here. Charles .Haddon. Spurgeon (19 June 1834 - 31 January 1892) Born Kelvedon, Eessex. The father of Avis, was Charles Gordon Spurgeon, born the 2nd. Dec, 1883, West Bengal. India. His baptism was on the 20th. June, 1884. This took place in Ajmere, Rajputana, now called Rajasthan Western India. The father of Charles was John Samuel Spurgeon. I can't find a birth record for him, but when Charles was a young child, John Samuel was working as Asst. Station Master on the Western Railway, at Ajmere, now Rajasthan, as recorded on the birth certificate of Charles. John Samuel married Margaret Dempster, said to be born 18 Dec. 1854 at Dinapore. West Bengal. India. They are said to be married in 1877. These would be the Spurgeon, paternal grandparents of Avis, and not Charles Haddon Spurgeon. The parents of Margaret Dempster, were George Gordon Demnpter and his wife Margaret. This is recorded on the birth certificate of their daughter MARGARET. I still have not been able to find the birth place of John Samuel Spurgeon, The paternal Grandfather of Avis. The parents of Avis, were Charles Gordon Spuregon, an accountant, at the age of 47, married Millicent Bertha Syme Bell, aged 32. B.1899. At St.James, Delhi. Her parents were Albert Herbert Bell, medical practioner and his wife Elizabeth Sophia, the maternal grandparents of Avis. If there are folk out there working on the Spurgeon family, I would be glad if they could contact me. Kind regards, Geoffrey Williams. Sheffield.
