She was born in Exeter in 1833 (although later censuses show her d.o.b. as 1837 or 1844) and married James Joseph Meyrick in London in 1881. He was an army vet attached to the R.A. and served in India 1868-1880, a part of that time being Superintendent of Horse-breeding Operations in the Punjab. I can't find any reference to my great x3 aunt in the 1851 and 1861 UK censuses and wonder whether she might have gone to seek her fortune in India, where she might have met Mr Meyrick. My reason for thinking she might have been a lodging house keeper in India is that London Post Office directories from the mid-70s and the 1881 census show her as having a lodging house in Upper Baker Street so if she were in India, maybe she was running one there too. Has anyone come across her in their research? Can anyone direct me to resources that might be useful? As far as I am aware, wives and families would follow the men around. At least that was expected in the days of the HEIC, I am not 100 percent sure after they lost the army. My great grandparents ran an Hotel, but after he retired from the army. Someone might have reference to Thackers. ________________________________ From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: INDIA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, 27 March 2015, 11:17 Subject: [INDIA] Lodging house keepers in India This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
