    3.   Sharmain I would take a look on the Fibis website. There is a lot to help people on there, in particular I recommend you get the book "Researching ancestors in the East India Company Armies" by Peter Bailey. (Make sure you get the book for the earlier period up to the mutiny). You should be able to find some interesting material in the British Library & some may be on LDS films if you cannot get to London easily). In my own research I found out a lot about my great-great grandfather who was a gunner in the Bengal Artillery: his recruitment in London in 1847, the ship he sailed on, posting in Bengal, promotion to sergeant and then transfer to commissariat and progression through various ranks there.   Good luck! Simon. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharmain Gallagher" india@rootsweb.com To:"india@rootsweb.com" Cc: Sent:Sun, 30 Aug 2015 14:04:21 +0100 Subject:[INDIA] Robert Belchambers 67th N.I. Dear list, I am trying to find our how one of my relatives got to India.  I have found a reference in IOR for my 3rd g. grandfather Robert Belchabers (b. about 1800) which lists the following: Name: Robert BELCHAMBERS Event type:Biography Biographical notes: Sgt, Bengal Army 1819-62; IOR Biographical File Would there be anymore details in the biographical record or is the information transcribed what would be included in the record at the British Library? I also have a reference that lists him as Quartermaster Sgt 67th N.I. Am I likely to find any army records for him as he was in the native infantry? 3. Hullo List, Sharmain, as your man served after 1831, you could initially look at the Registers of Bengal Army European Soldiers, available on LDS microfilm, or at the British Library ,London. For details, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Bengal Army http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Bengal_Army <http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Bengal_Army> Cheers Maureen > On 31 Aug 2015, at 10:28 pm, Simon Harding via <india@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > > > Sharmain > > I would take a look on the Fibis website.
