When my mother's cousin died last year in the UK and her death was being registered, her daughter put down the place of her mother's birth as "Karachi, India," (she was born there in 1920). However, the clerk behind the desk insisted that this be changed to Pakistan. Of course, Pakistan didn't exist as a country in 1920, yet the clerk was insistent. What does one do in a case like this?
