These photos were sent to me by *Eric Welch*, ex Bangalore, who has kindly allowed me to pass on to you for your web page. The first one is of Edward James Campbell who was at one time a supervisor in the Kolar Gold Fields. The photo is believed to have been taken at his home at 33, Thambu Chetty Street, Cox Town in the 1940s. Edward was born in about 1863 and married Charlotte Mercy DeSilva in 1887 at St Andrew's Church, Madras. Edward and Charlotte's children were: Audrey, Barbara, Cynthia, Mary, Rosalind, lillian, Joseph, Grace, Edward, Thomas, Ivy, Willie, Charlotte, Florence, Thomas and Henrietta. They may have had 2 other sons: Percy and Oscar. Edward's brother, Thomas, married Charlotte's sister, Bertha Clarissa DeSilva. The child on Edward's knee is his grandson, George Lansdown, child of Audrey Campbell and Herbert Lansdown. Edward died in 1947 and is buried in Hosur Road Cemetery. The second photo was taken on a Picnic at Husur in 1932 and shows some of Edward Campbell daughters with husbands and boyfriends. Sidney Long was born in India and served in the British Army there during WW2. He then worked on the railways. He married Alice Paul and they had four children, Peter, Valerie, and the twins, Daphne and Joyce. Alice's family ran an Ice Cream shop in Bangalore. The Long's and Paul's moved to the UK in the mid 1950's, settling in Canvey Island, Essex and in North London. Alice and Sidney have both passed away and their grandchildren are hoping to contact anyone who may have known them. Valerie has also died and her children intend to visit Bangalore and KGF in 2001 to see where their decendants used to live. They would love to meet up with anyone who might have memories of the family, although they know it's a long shot after the passage of time. The family are also related to the Scott's and D'Lima's. My father worked in the Kolar Gold Mines from 1941 to 1981. My Dad's close Anglo-Indian friend was a gentleman by name Noel Hughes and Mr Hughes's son by name Lindsay continues to be a close friend of mine. Mr Noel Hughes also worked and retired as a high ranking official from Ashanti and definitely knows "Mac" Valentine. My parents are settled in Madras after Dad retired in 1981. I am writing this email from Houston, TX. Some of the British names that come to mind are Mr B.T.Hoskins, Mr Miller and Mr Tragay who left KGF in the 1960s. My Dad worked for Mr RGK Morrison in the early and late 40s. The bartender Agambaram kept great records, the monthly charges then being deducted from the officers pay. Pretty interesting stuff!!! One of my earliest memories at Kolar was playing with Ivan Paul now deceased, the Pauls of that branch lived next to my uncle Charles McCosh at Mysore or Marikuppam. Ivan's sister Nancy married Hector Coffey ex Kolar and they live here in Perth you probably know all of this. (I wonder if Ivan Paul is connected to the Pacheco's of Rose Lane and Alexender Street in Bangalore? Because the name is very familiar.) My aunt lived in a cottage in the Snaize compound, we used to call old Mrs. Snaoze Auntie Beer - don't know why. I met my first husband John Hanlon(RAF) at a Sunday morning dance at the Opera House I was 16. My best friend at school was Eileen Patton who lives in UK and we are still in touch. I was in regular touch with Bill Richards and have visited and made a contribution to his school hence one of the rooms are named The Westrip Room. I note that mention was made of Ronnie McCosh, he was my first cousin.
