My ancestor joined the 18th Hussars in 1859 and served in Bangalore. In 1866 he transferred to the Commissariat's Dept. Secunderabad and died intestate in 1871. His widow (also my ancestor) received one-third dues while the remainder was remitted to the War Office. Both payments were made by the 18th Hussars. I am keen to learn why the 18th Hussars administered the estate and not the Commissariat's Department. Also, was the repayment to the War Office for a bond to enter India? TIA
