Hello List Karl said: I am trying to locate details pertaining to an ancestor - Charles Gustav Roth of German stock. He was employed in Kashmir India with the Maharaja circa 1858. He was part of the British East India Company. The East India Company in India was transferred to the British Crown in August 1858 Kashmir was a Princely State. The impression I am under is that East India Company employees working there would probably be connected with the Army or Civil Service, perhaps the Political Department, however I have no definite knowledge about this. I looked in some online directories covering more senior members of the Civil Service and Army, for 1857,1859 and 1869 but could find No mention of the name Roth. This was using the search facility which is sometime not as accurate as it could be. I also checked the Beta Family Search site without success. Does Karl have any further information to send to the List, including why he believes Charles Gustav Roth worked for the East India Company, rather than directly for the Maharaja of Kashmir? If he did work for the East India Company/Government of India, there may be records at the British Library such as those for the Uncovenanted Civil Service, but Karl would need to have some indication about the occupation Charles Gustav Roth was in. If he worked directly for the Maharaja, I do not know of any records. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
