    3. Chris, One of the documents you are quoting from is William's Medal Index Card. You can tell some things from such a card, but in the absence of any other records, you cannot tell everything. Starting from the top he first served overseas in the Royal Fusiliers as Private 635. The little red asterisk beside the rank of Private and then against the 1914-15 Star further down indicates that the rank impressed on the back of the Star was that of Private. It's not clear to me what number was impressed on the back of the Star, but it was either 635, or GS/47350. The next entry indicates that he served with the 10th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. The 10th Battalion was formed in the City of London in August 1914 as part of Kitchener's Second Army - it had the unofficial title of the Stockbrokers. In September 1914 it was attached to 54th Brigade, 18th (Eastern Division). In October 1914 it left the Brigade and became Army Troops in the same division. In March 1915 it was transferred to 111th Brigade, 37th Division. It landed at Boulogne (France) on 30th July 1915, and you will see that this date corresponds with the date on William's card (the theatre'1' indicates France and Flanders) confirming that he went to France with the 10th Battalion. At some stage he left the Royal Fusiliers, and he gained a Commission in the Indian Army on 18th December 1917. I have searched briefly for a record of the commission in the London Gazette without success, but the name Campbell is so common that I would need to spend some more time on it. As Lieutenant he was first placed on the General List of the Indian Army Reserve of Officers., and then he later served with the First Battalion of the 156th Regiment of Infantry of the Indian Army. His Victory Medal and British War Medal were impressed with the rank of Lieutenant and I think the VM will show the Army Reserve of Officers and the BWM the 156th Infantry Regiment. It looks as though the VM was issued by the UK, and the BWM by India. The notation in the column headed "Roll" is the notation of the medal roll held at The National Archives, London. William's VM will be listed on Roll Off170, page 58. His BWM is on roll IOf101A, page 132. His 1914-15 Star is listed on roll TP/75C3/ page 74. Rolls commencing with the prefix TP generally have more information that others. The other notations are some dates and refer to correspondence. As far as I am aware, no-one knows what these mean anymore, and the correspondence has been lost. On the reverse of the card is written 'Officer-in-charge, Military Department, Indian Officers forwards nominal rolls of officers, received from India. Entitled to 1914-1915 Star, and then (I think) despatched 23rd August 1922 (and to the Glasgow address shown further down). See http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Indian_Army#Reserve_of_Officers for additional information. If it were me my next step would be to obtain digipics of those original medal rolls at TNA. If you want any further advice on how you might do this may I suggest that you contact me off list? May I just add that it is generally helpful to provide information such as year and place of birth etc. etc when asking about army records, as these can all assist. Noel
