    3. Thanks to Noel: I have now looked at the Presidency marriage return in the British Library microfilms, and it confirms that Alice Edith Campbell's father was James Campbell (sadly, it's not an awfully helpful name, sort of the Scottish equivalent of John Smith). I took the opportunity to check if he was on the graveyard list for St Thomas's Cathedral (which is where she married - interestingly since it is an Anglican cathedral, and her husband was a Catholic), and he wasn't. None of the Presidency returns seem to show father's occupation, and I haven't been able to trace her birth or christening, so I'm not sure of the next step - though presumably he wasn't an army officer, or the return would have shown a rank. Alice Edith was "of full age", but either she must have been living with her father or he must have died, I suppose. I looked for a Bombay directory but couldn't find one. I have a lot on Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan already, but will check the PRO next time I am at Kew in case there is further material which wasn't in the AMS record. Mark Somerset
