    1. [INDIA] Family Trees on the Internet
    2. Noel Clark
    3. I echo what others have said concerning family trees on the internet. My own experience is that they are likely to be both out-of-date and inaccurate, and in some cases laughable. I have seen trees containing ancestors who died as infants, simply because the originator looked only at baptisms and marriages, and not at burials! In my case, I innocently provided material to various cousins in the late 1990s. It was, of course, 'work in progress.' It was put on the internet without my knowledge and without my permission. I have since corrected various mistakes in that preliminary material. (and greatly enhanced it). However, the mistakes in the 'work in progress' remain on the internet, and are perpetuated by subsequent users. In all the cases that I have come across, the web-sites concerned permit only the submitter of the family tree to change it or remove it altogether. I was once able to have my own name removed, but that is the only success I can recall. In at least one case, the submitter of the material has since died, so according to the policy of the web-site concerned, the incorrect material can never be removed. My other word of warning is that it is dangerous to send anyone a file of your family tree information unless you are assured of their credentials. Such files almost always contain details of people who are of no interest to the other party, but once you send these details you have no control over their subsequent distribution. Noel
