Hi Allan, I don't believe you will find anything as simple as a list of staff (or inmates?) at the jail. Different government departments had their own responsibilities for the jail. A short list of possible occupations:- Public Works Dept, Indian Medical Service, Posts and Telegraphs, Marine, Police, Teachers, Clergy and of course the Military. I have no doubt that this list could be added to (agricultural experts?) but have not investigated. If your wife's ancestors were civilians then your best bet is to start with the New Calcutta Directory and Thacker's Bengal Directory. This would not only give you the relevant years but would also give the Government Department they worked for. For example, my great grandfather is noted as a PWD Accountant Port Blair. I was then able to obtain more records from the PWD Lists at the BL. I hope this helps. If you do find any shortcuts please let us know. Mark
