    3. Hi I am new to the list and wondering if anyone is researching the Spain family in Calcutta,Bengal. William Collman Spain b 1814 Kent,England and Mary Ann Florence b 1806 were married in Calcutta 1836. They had 6 children between 1837 and 1842. Mary Ann died in 1842 aged 36 and William died 1846 aged 32 both deaths in Calcutta. Their first son, also named William Collman SPAIN b 1837 marr Mary Agnes Munt in Calcutta 1864. It seems the Spain family were invariably listed as Mariner/Midshipman/Captain . They are not listed as having been employed by the East India Company therefore maybe employed by a Merchant Shipping Co. or they could have been free mariners allowed to trade in the Indian waters. Will be interested to hear from anyone connected to this family. Thank you Ann Menzies Cairns,Australia

    3. Hi Ann, An offshoot of our tree has a Constance Mary SPAIN marrying our Frederick William CLARKE in Calcutta in 1902. Mary was born/bapt cir 1885. Her father was R.G.SPAIN, mother and further details unknown. I also have a Sarah SPAIN, who married Henry Gray, in Canada I should think, they had one son that I know of, John Henry GRAY, b, 1830 in Canada, he then came Victoria, Australia for the gold rush. I don't believe there is any relationship between these families, but who knows. Are any of these in your tree?
