Author: PeterHenderson67 Surnames: Warburton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2540/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can anyone tell me what the (Indian) Ordnance Commissariat Department (OCD) did in the period around 1854 to 1863. And what duties would a Conductor & Sub-conductor employed by the OCD have undertaken? My gggrandfather, John Warburton, was given the (warrant officer) rank of Sub-conductor in 1854. He went to work with the OCD and was made a Sub-conductor of Ordnance on 7 August 1857. His posting is shown as "Arsenal". He was appointed Conductor on 16th November 1859. And was pensioned (retired) in 1863 at the age of 44. He had previously been a Sergeant in the 2nd Company, 6th Batallion of the Bengal Artillery which as I understand it was a Regiment of the East India Company. He had served in the Sutlej Campaign during the First Sikh Wars (1845-46). Any information would be much appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
