Mel, Hmm, I've spent some time trying to get a lead on this fellow, with no real progress. Tried the London Gazette, The Times, etc., but no luck so far. OCR is picking up names such as 'Sutton' and 'Dutton' as well as 'Button', and that's not helping. The only snippet that I have found is that the Register of the Second Anglo-Boer War http://www.casus-belli.co.uk/index.asp does show a Private W H Button serving with the Leicestershire Regiment, as Pte. 8072. According to www.ancestry.co.uk there are 22 medal cards for 'William Button', and 5 for 'William H Button.' Two of the 'William H Button's died in the war (Dorsetshire Regiment and Household Battalion). 8 of the 'William Button's also died. You can check which ones from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web-site. I suggest that after you have done that and compiled a list of the remaining men you could then go through the Service Records and Pension Records on ancestry, where there are also a number of William Buttons, and quite probably eliminate some more possibles. This will, I think, leave you with quite a short 'final list' of candidates, and we may be able to solve the puzzle from there. I take it that the details you have posted come from an obituary of some sort? It might be helpful to post the details of that. Noel
