Hello List Margaret said: I found a burial record for my (possible) ggggrandmother, Mary Anne RODRIGUES, on an LDS film for Bengal, 1880. The heading is "Appendix 5D (Quarterly Returns) Burials within the jurisdiction of the Senior Marriage Registrar, Calcutta, during the Quarter ending 31st March 1880". What burials would be in the jurisdiction of the Senior Marriage Registrar? Why would they be in the jurisdiction of an official concerned with marriages? I hope someone has some answers, or at least opinions. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Birth and death registration which deals with the civil registration of births and deaths. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Birth_and_death_registration There is mention in this Fibiwiki page of details of birth registrations appearing on forms with the heading 'Office of the Marriage Registrar, Calcutta'. So it appears in Calcutta the Office of the Marriage Registrar was also responsible for the registration of births and deaths Registrar marriages, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Registrar_marriages commenced in 1852, so probably the administrative structure then in place was used when registration of births and deaths was introduced in Calcutta in 1864.
