Hello List Elaine said: I found 2 entries from Bengal Military Orphan Society (this far) on the FIBIS site for: 1. Ellen Brown b. Sep 10, 1840 arrived in England April 24, 1841, fathers name: Bt Major H. Brown, the rest lists missing pages. 2. Ellen Brown b. Sep 10, 1840 arrived in England April 24, 1849, fathers name: Bt Major W. Brown, pension payable: Agents, date of discharge: May 26, 1853, Remarks: Dead (Name crossed through on original document. So far I have not found her brother William Calderwood Brown so am I to assume he did not go to England? I know Major Brown allowed for these children in his will dated 1844, he died 1845, stating " I hereby appoint the directors and managers of the Bengal Military Orphan Fund the trustees of my aforesaid children." As Major Brown died in 1845, his daughter would not be an orphan in 1841 and would not be in the care of the Bengal Military Orphan Society. Therefore, the 1841 entry applies to someone else, or the details are incorrect. The next thing to consider is, who was the mother of the children. The LDS beta site lists the following but there is no mother's name. Name William Calderwood Brown Gender Male Baptism/Christening Date 03 Nov 1834 Baptism/Christening Place DELHI, BENGAL, INDIA Birth Date 20 Aug 1828 Father's Name William Brown Mother's Name Indexing Project (Batch) Number C75003-7 System Origin India-EASy Source Film Number 498970 Reference Number v 38 p 295 Name Ellen Brown Gender Female Baptism/Christening Date 08 Jun 1845 Baptism/Christening Place Delhi, Bengal, India Birth Date 10 Sep 1840 Father's Name William Brown Mother's Name Indexing Project (Batch) Number C75005-1 System Origin India-EASy Source Film Number 498983 Reference Number v 67 p 154 If the wife in Scotland, mentioned by Elaine in another post, was the mother, she would be about 45 when Ellen was born, which is not impossible. The fact that the wife's name is not mentioned on both baptisms many years apart perhaps indicates that the mother was someone else, perhaps different mothers for the two children given the difference in ages. The fact that Ellen was sent to England by the Bengal Military Orphan Society indicates that her mother was European, as only children with both parents European were sent to England, the other children remained in India. Also the children needed to have family or friends to be sent to. It is not clear why Ellen would have remained in India until 1848/1849 when her father died in 1845. Could she have had a mother, not the Scottish wife, still in India who perhaps then died c 1848/1849? Or perhaps the Scottish wife was the mother, and remained a few years in India before returning. The son, depending who the mother was, may have been educated either in England/Scotland or in India. If the latter, he may have been in employment by the time the father died. Ellen's death should be in the English or Scottish records. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
