    3. Hi This may be unrelated to your Palmers, but just in case it helps, here's correspondence I had a couple of years ago about Palmers in my family. Hi Phil, I am very pleased to hear from you, i am still researching the family. I also found the family on the 1871 census. Frederick Augustus Palmer the father of the children was a East India Merchant, so we have the connection. I think something must have happened to them between 1861-71, i cant find any reference anywhere to Frederick Augustus Palmer and wife Julia Margaret Palmer. They were in Liverpool in 1861 as Frederick the child was born then,i have his birth certificate,he was born Liverpool,19th October 1861 Frederick Augustus Palmer, i havent found them as yet on the 1861 census so maybe they were as you say in India. I have researched Julia/Julie the daughter, i have quite a bit of info on her, and i believe Fanny married a James Palmer of Surrey. Now heres a question Phil, where did you get your info on Ada ? as Ada was my great grandmother, she was Ada Wilhelmina Palmer, she married my great grandfather William Aubrey Fletcher 6th October 1887. Her fathers name and occupation on marriage certificate was Frederick Augustus Palmer-East India Merchant (Deceased).they were married St Giles,Bloomsbury,Middlesex and her address was given as 18 Gower Street, Bedford Square. They were also together on the 1881 census as A.W Palmer born India,so must have known each other for some time prevoius to marriage. Julia Augusta Palmer - Ada's sister was staying with them on the 1891 census. heres the tricky bit, they had three children the first as on the 1891 census Henry A Fletcher, (my grandfather) he believed he was born out of wedlock, March 25th 1887 (havent found his birth certificate yet) his age on the census was 7 so could have been born 1884. The Ada you mention that married Arthur Francis Soundy 1881 seems to be Ada Mary Palmer, who was Arthur Soundy Phil?. I havent found any other info on the Martinnants than what you probrably already have from the census but will keep an eye out for you. The Palmers all came from Liverpool and i have traced them back to about 1720, the children had several aunties and uncles at that time in Liverpool, so i guese the connection between your family and mine must have been close or maybe related, Julia Margaret Palmer(mother of children) maiden name was Roper, wonder what your Madieliene Matinnants maiden name was. on all the info i have on Ada wilhelmina Palmer and Julia Augusta Palmer theres reference to them being born Colaba,Bombay, which is at the very bottom of Bombay island,so a search in that district might turn up some interesting things. please keep in touch Phil. All the best for now Regards *//*Dear I hope you don't mind me emailing you. I came across a post you made a couple of years ago on the Acestry.com message board - looking for information about your 2 X great grandfather - Frederick Augustus Palmer. You mention he had a couple of daughters, Julie and Ada. I can't think how I got to your post, but it was the daughters names that caught my eye. I've been researching my family history and my 2 X greatgrandfather - Edward John Martinnant, born in Bombay - was in the Indian Civil Service. He and his family came to England some time in late 1861/early to mid 1862 and settled in London. You probably have this - in the 1871 census the Palmer children: Fanny - age 16y, born Bombay Julie - age - 15y, born Bombay Ada age - 13y, born Bombay Frederick - age 11y, born Liverpool were living with the Martinnant family in Wimbledon, London. All were orphans. The Palmer children are not listed in the 1861 census - so presumably still in India. In 1881 Frederick Palmer was a visitor at the Martinnant house. Ada married Arthur Francis Soundy that year in London. They had three children - all born in India. There are no Martinnants or Palmers listed in the 1851 Bombay census - but then this did not cover every district of the city. I have no idea what the connection between the families was - but it must have been fairly signifcant for the orphaned children to be staying with the Martinnants. Maybe you have more details now - I would be very interested. Do you have anything on the Martinnants in India? Regards Phil Bennett
