    1. [INDIA] Molloy (Malloy)
    2. I'm hoping that some knowledgeable soul will be able to help me. I'm trying to find out which regiment my ancestor was in but there seems to be conflicting information: India Records at British Library Catherine Molloy bapt 1873 Nowshera Station daughter of William and Jane Molloy Pte in HM 55 regt living in Campbellpore. John Molloy bapt 1875 Delhi son of William and Jane Molloy Pte in HM 55 regt Elizabeth Mulloy bapt 1880 daughter of William and Jane Molloy Pte in HM 59 regt Army Returns from Find My Past Catherine Molloy born 1873 Nowshera HM 30 regt Catherine Molloy born 1873 Campbellpore HM 55 regt John Molloy born 1875 Delhi HM 30 regt Elizabeth Molloy 1880 Dugshai HM 30 regt Wiki tells me that the 30 and 59 regt amalgamated in 1881 so am guessing that the army returns were updated with the new regiment number for Elizabeth, but I don't understand why both John and Catherine appear on the army returns under 30 regt when their baptism records state 55th regt. The only thing that I can think of is that William changed regiment. Is that possible? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Niki Osborne from a chilly Devon

    3. Hi Niki: If his regiment was leaving India and he preferred to stay in India he would have transferred to another Regiment in India.   This was quite common among British troops especially if they had married local women. 3. Hello List Niki said: I don't understand why both John and Catherine appear on the army returns under 30 regt when their baptism records state 55th regt. I suspect the sequence of events was: William Molloy was initially in the 55th, but transferred to the 59th, which amalgamated with the 30th, and thereafter he was regarded as being in the 30th. I do not have access to Find My Past so cannot comment definitely but the births Niki found on Find My Past do not seem to be from the "Chaplains Returns", because I looked on Family Relatives.com which also has these returns for free. Reading about the Find My Past database it seems likely the records Niki found were births taken from regimental registers, presumably the 30th Regiment. These records probably are only classified according to the register they came from, not the regiment the soldier was in when the birth took place. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has the page Chaplains Returns http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Chaplains_Returns Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
