Do you have access to The Times of India? This has been digitised by ProQuest and is available as a licensed resource (i.e. subscription) through certain libraries and academic institutions. It is part of the "ProQuest5000" database. There are obituaries and articles in the Times of India from 1 August and for several days after. I therefore conclude that he probably died on 31 July 1940.
