My father, Richard (Dick) Bateman was also a fireman in Bombay at the time of the explosion. He was on leave, moving house, at the time of the first explosion, rushed to the docks, and survived the second explosion. There are articles on the internet about the explosion. My father joined the Bombay fire service after evacuating from Burma. He joined other firemen, including the chief, I think, that he knew from Burma. Are you in Scotland? I'll be visiting Glasgow in a couple of weeks. After the war my father went back to Burma and after Burma's independence, he went to Glasgow where he was a fireman.
