The first child of John Macdonald and Charlotte Mayfield, Jane Macdonald was born on 09 April 1811 in Poonamallee, Tamil Nadu, Madras, India according to IGI and later Scottish censuses. Subsequent children were born in Scotland. I can find no record of the Macdonald/Mayfield marriage and I wonder what John Macdonald, variously described as 'druggist, chemist & medical practitioner' was doing in India? It seems more natural for Charlotte to be there as the daughter of a soldier. I haven't researched any India connections before so shall be grateful for any advice.
