Rebecca   I have just found the Attestation Papers of my direct ancestor through http://www.familysearch.org/  using its Library/Library Catalogue tab.  The same papers were on Findmypast.co.uk - a better alternative though costly.     The papers provided personal details such as height, colour of hair and skin; birthplace, trade, occupation, record of service and reason for discharge.  The films cover a period from 1760-1872.
