You might also be interested in a novel, The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason published in 2003 by Picador, ISBN 0-330-49269-1. Although, as I say, a novel, I imagine it is based on some basic facts and covers the exploits of a piano tuner sent from London to Burma in 1886 on a special mission, but which seems a bit far-fetched at times! His journey through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal to Bombay, and then by train to Calcutta is described.
