For anyone whose colonial family moved to or dallied for a time in Singapore or Malaya, there's a searchable newspaper database 1831-2006 here: http://newspapers.nl.sg/Default.aspx Also covers events elsewhere in the Empire, including London and Burma, and in countries such as Thailand. BDMs, engagements, passenger lists, local theatricals, policemen and criminals - all the things you really wanted to know about Colonial life. Worth looking at, particularly for less-common surnames.
