Edwin Bonner (Junior) (my wife's ggrandfather) Born on 26th February 1852 in Bangalore and was baptized in St Mark's Church on 27th April 1854. Edwin Bonner (Junior) married Grace Peace (daughter of Charles Peace and Grace Thompson) on 26th November 1879 in the Methodist Church, St Thomas' Mount. Edwin having become a Store Sergeant in 1878 (at the age of 26), Edwin served in that rank while remaining on the UL in the Ordnance Department of the Indian Army, for 11 years. He became a Sub-conductor effective 13th February 1889, at the age of 37 and thus became a fully-fledged member of the Ordnance Department. Records show that he was employed under Local Service (LS) terms and that he had been awarded a medal or medals during or before 1889 - but that was in respect of a campaign while serving with the RA or as a member of the Ordnance Department has yet to be ascertained. Between 1889 and 1895 Edwin served in the "Arsenal Office" at Fort St George. In 1986 became an Assistant Overseer there. He was pensioned on 1st April 1896 (age 43), in Madras. Edwin was serving at St Thomas Mount during 1889, and at Port Blair, Andaman Islands, during the years 1902 to 1906, and that he was in Bangalore by 1912. where he died on 6th June 1912 as a pensioned conductor. He appeared in the 1906-1908 India Army Lists as being a pensioned Conductor based at Port Blair. However, the birth entry for his daughter Alexandria, born 22 Mar 1902, gives Edwin as being a Commissioned Overseer, Port Blair. Is it possible that Edwin (Junior) was employed as a prison overseer? Grace Elizabeth Bonner (my Wife's grandmother) Born on 2 Nov 1886 but not sure where. She married Charles Fennimore Cooper on 26th Jul 1906 at Port Blair. Charles was a Superintendent of Land Records and work in Burma, India and the Malay Straits and was living in Mergui at time of Marriage. His father William Henry Cooper was an Assistant Apothecary and later became a Surgeon, believed to be with the army! Vincent Edwin Bonner Peace Bonner Son of Edwin Bonner (junior) and married Grace Peace (daughter of Charles Peace and Grace Thompson) on 26th November 1879 in the Methodist Church, St Thomas' Mount. born on 11th May 1891 Vincent first marriage was to Beryl Chambers Owen on 1st Dec 1910 in Port Blair, where he was an overseer and that the couple had a daughter, Dorothy Peace Bonner. Vincent's re-married twenty-one years later, as a divorcee to Eileen Bertha Pearson on 9th Mar 1937 when Vincent resided in Calcutta and worked as a Forest Officer. What happened in these 20+ years is a blank. It would be interesting to know for how many years Vincent lived in Port Blair. His father Edwin (Junior) was posted there in 1896 when Vincent would have been about eight and we know that Vincent was working on the island as late as 1916 in, we think, the same profession as his father Edwin. Where did Vincent go to school, where did he work - was it at the prison like his father? Departments include Medical, Forest, Public Works, Marine, Police, Jailors, Sawmills, Agricultural, Treasury and a few other establishments. Some of the occupations, such as postal, cable and wireless are not listed in this document. Due to the age of the document and a poor printout, some names and details are not very legible. Included are date of birth, joined service, appointment, pay of appointment and remarks. For those who have ancestors buried in Port Blair, Aberdeen, a large or most of the cemetery was swept away by the tsunami on boxing day 2004.
