    3. It's always dangerous to generalise, but ....... Presbyterian marriages were frequently held in the manse (minister's home) or some other private house. It was much more unusual for a Church of England or Roman Catholic marriage to be celebrated in private houses, as there was a need to use consecrated premises (Church, Chapel). However, there are always exceptions, and different practices may have prevailed in different times and places. 3. Maureen wrote with respect to this marriage: The death record given by Jill below , with image, is available on findmypast (pay site}, although the transcription incorrectly says place of death Chakrata, when it was Cawnpore. The records on Ancestry are in fact the dataset from FamilySearch, which are the India Office collection. If they are in FamilySearch they will generally be be on findmypast, as both datasets have their origin in the India Office records. There only reason they won't be on findmypast, or you ca't find them on findmypast, is that some records were too fragile to film, errors such as mis-transcription etc --ooOoo-- People on the list may like to have a look at: http://www.fibis.org/british-india-records-findmypast-10-tips-searching/ This will help them understand what they might be able to do to get more out of the FindMyPast site, particularly when the search finds "0" results. Please do not accept that this means that the results are not on their site or in the original India Office Records. They may be on FindMyPast but difficult to find. In addition to the reasons that Maureen gives should be added mis-indexation and plain omission, I'm afraid. Good Hunting! Peter Bailey Chairman Families in British India Society www.fibis.org

    3. Hi Sue, In my grandparents' case they married in 1906 in a church in Bombay, but reading through other family accounts in colonial times in NZ (where my grandparent's moved to after his term in the BI Army in India was completed) and in Tasmania where my other grandparents resided - and around Australian rural regions, it was quite common for a wedding to be held in the bride's family home and the visiting priest/minister to officiate for the ceremony. Cheers Ainslie.

    2. Nicholas Wilson via
    3. Hello, I need help learning something of the Lancashire born groom, my great, great uncle He was last seen in the 1851 census as being at school in Dollar,Scotland, aged about 13. The bride may have been born in Farnham, Surrey,c.1838. Though his younger brother, Arthur Ross was in India at the time of the wedding working for the O&R Railway near Lucknow, and his father, Thomas, had died in Meerut five years earlier, the brothers were unaware of the others presence in India until 1876. I do not have access to Thackers Indian or Bengal Gazettes , but someone who does may be able to help me. I took a quick look at FIBIS's marriages without luck. Thanks, Nick (Canada)

    3. Hi all One of my relatives married in Simla at 13 1/2 following the death of her father. She had a number of children but the first born seems to have arrived when she was 18 years old. A word of warning ! A few years ago I contacted and met the great granddaughter of this lady who was then in her 70's. We had a lovely lunch and she presented me with a family tree that she had inherited. I was delighted and we went on to talk about two of our family in more detail. She was absolutely horrified by the news that Elizabeth was 13 1/2 on her marriage to William Ball. She wouldn't hear the discussion that this was "normal" for the time. I also mentioned that her much loved Uncle married four times ( having been widowed three times). This also went down like a lead balloon. This lady never answered my letters again and the much promised family photos never arrived. The lesson I have learnt .............don't say anything too controversial until you have the photos/ letters you have been promised! I had no intention of upsetting this lovely woman but that is obviously what I did. Cathy N Devon Researching Picton Davies, Picton Clark, Cox.

    2. Ann Chidley via
    3. It was frequently that a girl married at 14 years old especially if her father was in the army. The allowance for a child stopped when that child became 14.  The boys often went into the army as cadets and the girls were married off.  My great, great, great grandmother was married shortly before her 14th birthday, but it gave her age as 14 on the marriage certificate.

My wife's great grandmother married at Calcutta at the age of 14. If you look in the records you will find earlier marriages than that. In England, until the Age of Marriage Act of 1929, boys could marry at 14 and girls at 12 provided that the marriage was capable of 'fruitful consummation'. Even if they managed to marry below that age, by subterfuge, the marriage would be valid provided that they stayed together until they had both reached the legal age.
