    1. [INDIA] SPURGEON
    2. Noel Clark via
    3. Geoffrey. If your second cousin's grandparents were John Samuel Spurgeon and his wife Margaret, then they would appear to be John Samuel Spurgeon and Margaret Dempster, who married 24th March 1877 at All Saints Church, Ajmere(?), Calcutta. That marriage record says that John Samuel's father was Samuel Spurgeon. A John Samuel Spurgeon was born to Samuel Spurgeon and his wife Mary Ann on 13th December 1848 and baptised at Cawnpore on 16th July 1849. Samuel was "late Quartermaster Regiment of Loodiana." In fact Samuel had died on 9th June 1849 of a fall from his horse. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=2D1DAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA334&dq=cawnpore+spurg eon+1849&hl=en&sa=X&ei=3EERVcuyDo2F8gWk1YHYCw&ved=0CCEQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=ca wnpore%20spurgeon%201849&f=false His will is on FindMyPast. A Samuel Spurgeon married Mary Ann Preston on 28th December 1834 at Ghazeepore. Samuel was of the "Honourable Company's European Regiment at Dinapore." This would appear to be the correct line. I have not been able to quickly trace Samuel Spurgeon further back - no father's name is given on the records on FindMyPast or FamilySearch - but as Samuel Spurgeon married in 1834 he could not possibly be a child of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. One possible source of confusion, or indeed connection, could be the name of Charles Haddon Spurgeon's father. He died on 14th June 1902 in London, and the Lutheran Church Review volume 22 page 142 gives his name as John S. Spurgeon. You can view this reference at https://archive.org/stream/lutheranchurchr02assogoog#page/n152/mode/2up. The "S" may well be Samuel, leaving open the possibility of a connection further back. However, I cannot see the direct connection claimed by your cousin.

    3. Hello, I don't gather from your email if you are discounting Charles Haddon Spurgeon altogether, or if he is just outside your immediate search area, but the name Spurgeon has deep connections with the Baptist Church. CHS founded Spurgeon's College, the Baptist Training college. So, I wonder if your search subjects were in India as Baptist Missionaries? Google searches for the Baptist Union, Spurgeon's College and/or Baptist Missionary Society will produce information and contact details should you need them. I hope that helps. 3. Hello List, I have been trying to help my second cousin Avis O'Kane (nee Spurgeon in the UK) to trace her family tree, but seem to have come to a halt at present. Avis says that C.H. Spurgeon was her Great-Grandfather, however I have no verified documentation for this. Concerning CH Spurgeon, I have found out that his father was John Spurgeon, born in Clare, Suffolk. 15 July 1810, and his mother was Eliza, born near to Belchamp Otten on 3 May 1815. They did have 17 children, but 9 died as infants, so there is a possibility that Avis could be related. Apparently Charles H. and his wife Susannah only had twin sons, Charles & Thomas b. 1856. Avis would have to be descended from either Charles or Thomas, however I can find no link here. Charles .Haddon. Spurgeon (19 June 1834 - 31 January 1892) Born Kelvedon, Eessex. The father of Avis, was Charles Gordon Spurgeon, born the 2nd. Dec, 1883, West Bengal. India. His baptism was on the 20th. June, 1884. This took place in Ajmere, Rajputana, now called Rajasthan Western India. The father of Charles was John Samuel Spurgeon. I can't find a birth record for him, but when Charles was a young child, John Samuel was working as Asst. Station Master on the Western Railway, at Ajmere, now Rajasthan, as recorded on the birth certificate of Charles. John Samuel married Margaret Dempster, said to be born 18 Dec. 1854 at Dinapore. West Bengal. India. They are said to be married in 1877. These would be the Spurgeon, paternal grandparents of Avis, and not Charles Haddon Spurgeon. The parents of Margaret Dempster, were George Gordon Demnpter and his wife Margaret. This is recorded on the birth certificate of their daughter MARGARET. I still have not been able to find the birth place of John Samuel Spurgeon, The paternal Grandfather of Avis. The parents of Avis, were Charles Gordon Spuregon, an accountant, at the age of 47, married Millicent Bertha Syme Bell, aged 32. B.1899. At St.James, Delhi. Her parents were Albert Herbert Bell, medical practioner and his wife Elizabeth Sophia, the maternal grandparents of Avis. If there are folk out there working on the Spurgeon family, I would be glad if they could contact me. Kind regards, Geoffrey Williams. Sheffield.

    3. Dear David: I am up a similar tree with one Capt James Stewart of the Bombay Army [killed 04 Jan 1779 at Karla] and have been searching for details about him for quite a while. Perhaps I can tell you of the path I have gone on and this may give you a clue. Search the National Archives at Kew with particular reference to the HEICo and try to determine which Regiment he belonged to and whether he was in the HEICo service or not.. The British Library may not have much of information. If you have the name of the regiment the Regimental Center in the UK may be contacted. They are usually prompt in their reply. If I cannot think. If I do I will get in touch. 3. In 'Two Monsoons' Theon Wilkinson has the epitaph on the tomb of Brevet Ensign William Graham, who died at Monghyr in 1829, aged 86: "William Graham came out to India a private in the Honourable Company's Army in 1766 and for his meritorious and gallant conduct was honoured with the Brevet of Ensign; frugal and judicious in the course of life, after retiring from active duties of his profession, he creditably educated his children and maintained his family and accumulated a very considerable fortune." I have seen what FIBIS has which is from 'Dodwell + Miles Bengal Army Officers' and also the entry in 'Hodson's, Officers of the Bengal Army, 1758-1834'. Can anyone please tell me if the British Library is likely to have any information in addition to this? David Railton

    2. Peter STRAUSS via
    3. Hi Mary-Anne and All, I do have much of the further information that you suggested may assist and with hindsight should have listed this in my original enquiry. Emily's parents were Mary Ann [nee Lynchey] and George Dudley. Mary Ann died in Sydney in 1901 and is buried at Waverley Cemetery, George died in1868 and is buried in St. Peters Churchyard, St. Peters. George Dudley was a convict and Mary Ann Lynchey the daughter of a convict who accompanied her mother to Australia. As with many convicts finding their parents has proved an unrewarding, 13 year, task. But I continue. Emily had 10 siblings, only 2 produced children and I have followed these as far as BDM release dates allow and further with the sites that I mentioned. The only references I have found to Emily is possibly in a newspaper report on Trove [prior to 1901] and the reference to her being "living" on her mother's death certificate. If she married after her mother's death it is not recorded in any Australian documentation that I have seen, nor on the other sites I have already mentioned. There are no Wills listed at the NSW Records. I will try again the sites that you mention. Thank you for your helpful response. Cheers Peter Melbourne -----Original Message----- From: Mary-Anne Gourley [mailto:maryanne.gourley@bigpond.com] Subject: Request for information on Emily Dudley on India List Hi Peter You do not give any information on Emily's parents - names for instance which would help in research or the place of her mothers death. I have checked the websites Familysearch and Findmypast for a marriage or death occurring for your 2nd great aunt and came up without any hits. As approximately only 75% of the records were copied and transferred back to the UK it may well be that Emily was in India but with no records pertaining to her. However have you searched the records for the UK, for instance the 1911 Census? Could Emily have travelled to England for some reason - perhaps there was family links there? Did Emily have siblings? where were they, is Emily mentioned in any documents relating to any of them? Perhaps Emily married after her mothers death in 1901? where was her father? Did either of Emily's parents leave a will? Familysearch has the indexes for BDM for India, Findmypast has indexed the BMD records from the BL and also provides the images. Ancestry also has the indexes. The FIBIS website is free to search has a database which contains over 1.5 million transcriptions. regards Mary Anne --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! I have found no marriage or death registration in Australia or on Ancestry or Family Search. A descendent of another family member stated in her previously on Ancestry tree that Emily died in Gujarat. Her death was apparently some time after Emily's mother died in 1901 as she is listed as living on her mother's death certificate. Can anyone point me to where I may find some details please? 3. Hello List The death record given by Jill below , with image, is available on findmypast (pay site}, although the transcription incorrectly says place of death Chakrata, when it was Cawnpore. The records on Ancestry are in fact the dataset from FamilySearch, which are the India Office collection. If they are in FamilySearch they will generally be be on findmypast, as both datasets have their origin in the India Office records. There only reason they won't be on findmypast, or you ca't find them on findmypast, is that some records were too fragile to film, errors such as mis-transcription etc Cheers Maureen On 18/03/2015, at 5:25 PM, Jill Glover via <india@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Nick, > > Do you have his death....? > > from ancestry.com > > Alfred Thornton Wilson in the India, Select Deaths and Burials, 1719-19 > > Name: > Alfred Thornton Wilson > > Gender: > Male > > Race: > White > > Age: > 64 > > Birth Date: > 1839 > > Death Date: > 9 Sep 1903 > > Burial Date: > 10 Sep 1903 > > Burial Place: > Cawnpore, Bengal, India > > FHL Film Number: > 527518 > > Reference ID: > Film 527-518 > > Cheers, > Jill > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INDIA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. Moira via
    3. Subject: bride at 13 and a half years of age: Hi Cathy, Maria and others: There is an historical reason for this. Most British soldiers were recruited at ages 17 or 18 years of age from the poorest sections of British society. After a long voyage of 6 months or longer (Clive's first voyage to India took him 15 months) they faced an alien land in an alien culture; they had no proper quarters; they faced tropical diseases such as cholera, small pox and typhoid;. terrible heat and local wars. . Only one in 10 returned home! and they had to wait till they were about 25-28 years old before they were allowed to marry "on the strength". Meaning they had to received their commanding officers pemission, otherwise upon marriage, they would not get the wives' and children's allowances. The children's allowances ceased at the age of 14. At this age the boys went into the army (in non-combative positions as buglers etc. ) and the girls had to marry.as they had no other means of support. Often the girls married the friends of their fathers in the military. In my own family many of the women were married at ages 14 or 15. One of them had at least 15 children - all by the same husband! These young girls were expected to look after their husbands and have dinner ready on the table when they came home. I read somewhere that one young bride chose to play marbles with her friends and did not have dinner ready for her husband. . The young husband beat her up! These young girls were children forced to grow up too soon. Yet they and their children have survived to become productive citizens to which we can all attest. These were the pioneers in India, who contributed much to Society for which they should be remembered.
