    1. [INDIA] Question regarding conduct warranting "Remanded to..."
    2. Ainslie via
    3. Greetings to all I was researching a twig on the family tree (brother to my husband's 2 x great grandfather) who I discovered entered the service of the HEIC Madras army in 1839, then aged 15 years. His record in the Madras Register of the European Soldiers shows that he was a QMS to the 47th Native Infantry "remanded to the Artillery in 1854 as Gunner" The record further states that he was in the 3rd Battalion Artillery, and invalided out in October 1856. >From baptismal records of his children he is shown to be serving in various regiments: Corporal, Madras 3rd Battalion Artillery (1843) QMS, 1st Native Light Cavalry (August 1852) Gunner, 4th Battalion Artillery (October 1854) What manner of misconduct would warrant the "remanded to..." and the demotion? Would this have been the subjected of a Court Martial, and are there likely to be any records available? Or will we just have to speculate and wonder??? Regards Ainslie Sharpe

    1. [INDIA] The Nizam and Russell's Brigade
    2. Ed Storey via
    3. I have read a few snippets about a military Brigade set up by Resident Russell, around 1800. It had European officers, both from the HEIC and HM forces. Unfortunately, there is not much I have been able to find. In particular, I would like to see rosters of those involved. It was in the Madras Presidency, but might have had soldiers from other locations. If anyone has any suggestions where to look for more information, I would be most appreciative. Ed of Falcon

    3. Hello List Noel, I wrote a previous post about how to reply to Message Board posts in 2010, when I first registered. I image the procedure is still the same. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/india/2010-12/1291695361 However, since I have registered, I am automatically logged in to reply to Message Board posts, so I can't say exactly what the current procedure is. However, if you are an Ancestry subscriber, you use the same User name as you have for Ancestry. This is the Message Boards page http://boards.rootsweb.com/?o_iid=33216&o_lid=33216&o_sch=Web+Property There is probably a button which says Register, (but I can't see this as I am logged in) Why don't you try again, and see if it works this time. 3. I note the gatewayed post to the list looking for an Ian And Isabebell JOHNSTON. I've never been successful in replying to an Ancestry Rootsweb board - I must be doing something wrong - so I am replying here. The enquirer might like to contact http://www.koi-hai.com/Default.aspx, a site dedicated to tea planters and plantations. I checked the Assam Tea Directory for 1949 and there is an entry for an "I. Johnston" at the Phaskowa Tea Plantation at Hatipotha (Hatipota). Other India Listers might be interested in the Koi-Hai website anyway.

I contacted them ages ago about my uncle who crashed his plane at the Dooars plantation where he worked in 1946 and they came up with all sorts - they knew people who remembered the incident. I can't recommend them highly enough. Joss

I have requested further information from contacts that are retired tea planters from NE India. I suggest that you also look at www.koi-hai.com website. 1. [INDIA] WILCOX
    2. Noel Clark via
    3. Sue, These may be complete red herrings, but would seem to me to be worth investigating. 1. A Margaret Robinson, daughter of John Robinson, Pte. Royal Scots and Elizabeth a native woman, was born on 24th December 1818 and baptised at Secunderabad 27th May 1819. 2. William Henry Wilson, bachelor, Pte. Sappers and Miners married Margaret Robinson, spinster, Indo-Briton, at Bangalore 30th June 1834. 3. Margaret Wilson, 8 months, daughter of William Henry Wilson, Sergeant Sappers and Miners, was buried at Belgaum on 24th November 1838. 4. Henry George Wilcox, Corporal, Bombay Engineers, married Margaret Wilson, widow, at Belgaum on 21st January 1839. I don't have a death of William Henry Wilson, but the above may be worthy of further research. Even if they can all be discounted in the end!

The two witnesses to this marriage  R  Foreman and D Fowler have you already tried to cross reference these names with Wilcox  and Wilson marriages. As well as sponsors at baptisms. She could well turn up with her previous husband as wits  or sponsors. Cheryl Sent from Samsung Mobile

    2. Ann Chidley via
    3. I think her name was Wilson not Wilcox. The marriage certificate should have her father's name.  If it is not Wilson, then there has been at least one marriage. One of mine used her Maiden Name, stated widow, she was in fact divorced. If you do need to check for prior marriages, look first at the dates close to her marriage.  Frequently if a husband was killed whilst serving in the army, the widow remarried within weeks.  It was a matter of survival. ________________________________ From: Sue Gutheridge via <india@rootsweb.com> To: "india-l@rootsweb.com" <india-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 16:08 Subject: [INDIA] Maiden or Married Name?
