    1. [INDIA] Michael William HOLMES
    2. Noel Clark via
    3. John, It's possible to pick up traces of this family, but so far they have not really led me anywhere. Michael's siblings were Ivan Edmond/Edmund Holmes and Hazel Hilda Holmes. They were the children of Edwin Alfred Holmes and Ethel Maud Caroline Powlesland, who were both born in India and who married in India in 1899. I have not found any other children. Hazel Hilda was born 25 Sep 1900. Ivan Edmund was born 5 Oct 1902. I have not found anything more on Hazel, but Michael (born 21 Jun 1910) and Ivan came to England in Jun 1948 - Michael described as a School Master and Ivan as a Railwayman. Neither were accompanied by a spouse. There are matching deaths for the Worthing Registration District. Michael in March 1998 and Ivan in April 1998. There's a marriage for an Ivan E. Holmes to a Mary B. McMahon in Worthing in 1979. If it were me I would direct my searches to the Worthing area. If Michael remained in teaching then he might rate a mention in the local newspapers. Similarly there might be an obituary for one or both of them. The certificate might be useful, if only for confirmation (or otherwise) that it was for the "right" Ivan. The birth index does not indicate any children (not surprisingly if it really was Ivan!).

    1. [INDIA] Railway Records India Office.
    2. Jill Glover via
    3. Good morning all, I hope someone can help me with advice as to where to go for info at the India Office for Railway records for George CLARKE. I have researched the family for many years with great help from listers, thank you. He was born cir 1834 supposedly on Jersey, though no record of Baptism there. In 1858 in Westminster he enlisted in the R.A. and sailed in 1861 on the Jalawar to India. He was discharged at Meerut in 1876, and then worked for the railways. I am able to spend one day at the India Office soon, and hope to find out more about George's railway career. I hope someone can perhaps tell me the best place to look and get the most info out of my day please? I have, from the bapt certs of some of his children, his occupation and postings between 1877 and 1890. George was a Sergeant, Govt. Railway Police, at Assensol, Howrah, Khagole and at Dinapore. I have him in Thackers 1881/3/4. I believe it was the E.I.Railway.? I would like to find out just what he did in his job , what was the role of Railway Police, and was 80R.s' a month a substantial wage? Photos I have of the family have them looking well dressed and prosperous. He and his wife Jane Ellen nee SMALL had 14 children, only one died young, amazing. His Burial record says he was a Govt. Pensioner, late Inspector of Police, (Railway). He died in 1912 and is buried in Calcutta. Jane Ellen died in Calcutta in 1935. I have visited their grave. Many thanks for any help, ,-._|\ best wishes, / Oz \ jill , brisbane. \_,--.x/ jill.glover5@bigpond.com v

    1. [INDIA] Sydney O'Hara Dawes
    2. desmond mardle via
    3. Much thanks to every one who has researched the name Sydney O'Hara Dawes, my maternal grandfather. Unfortunately, the death date and where buried stays illusive. It is the piece of information that I am really after. I have, through the kindness and efforts of other people, most of the details of the Dawes family. I believe that Sydney died sometime between 1940/47 probably in Calcutta. I know that his wife Mabel Lucy Dawes (Elias) is buried in the Lower Circular Road Cemetery in Calcutta. She died in 1919. It amazes me really that from the many different websites that people have gathered information on the Dawes Family, the name Sydney O'Hara Dawes, when died and where buried , remains a mystery. However, thanks every body, I'll keep trying! Gratefully,Desmond Mardle.

    1. [INDIA] "Military Adventurer"
    2. Noel Clark via
    3. Sue, A "military adventurer" is essentially a thrill-seeking soldier who fights for financial gain and/or political idealogy, generally in unauthorised conflicts such as rebellions and power struggles. A mercenary who takes his share of the spoils of victory by looting etc. The land equivalent of a pirate. A soldier of fortune. A freebooter.

    1. [INDIA] Indian Summer
    2. munrozoo via
    3. As mentioned before this Indian Summer was a mishmash of too many characters, who hopped in and out of the story for no apparent reason. After the first two episodes I still could not make head or tail of what the story was about nor did I realize that the last episode was the end of story (if there was a story. Such a waste of time. Simla was known for good schools and I am sure the Mission school would surely have chairs and desks for their pupils I am of the opinion that the author/ producer had no idea of what life was like during the Raj period in India. Joyce Munro -----Original Message----- This Masterpiece Theatre series is coming to the US, perhaps in the fall season. I'm so sorry to hear it's a bust. I hoped because the writer/producer is married to an Indian it would veer out of stereotypes. It sounds as if Anglo-Indians were completely misrepresented. Some of the actors have commented negatively about the storyline in the press. Sujata > > Finished watching Indian Summers last Sunday, right to the bitter end! And it was bitter, left a really nasty taste in the mouth. They’ve promised a second series, but I’m not sure I’ll bother to watch it. Cardboard characters, wooden acting, scarcely believable storyline. Only one actor stood out, the Scottish tea planter McLeod, who remained true to his character and his unwavering loyalty to his Indian friend. > Unbelievably, there were no Anglo-Indian characters, even minor ones, throughout the nine episodes. > Willing suspension of disbelief taken to new heights …. > Massively disappointed. > Rosemary > > > I wholeheartedly agree with Rosemary's sentiments. The series was a complete washout. The scenery, which was supposed to be Simla, was nothing like a Himalayan hill station - not even similar (pardon the pun). The characters were wooden and unrepresentative of the social behaviour of the time. As was so rightly pointed out by Rosemary, the Anglo-Indian community which thrived in those days, were completely excluded. The only one was the supposedly half-caste boy Adam, who did not resemble a mixed-race child. Also, the supposed Anglo-Indian school he attended, where the children sat on the ground with slates, did not represent the fine Anglo-Indian schools that abounded in Simla at the time, like Bishop Cotton. No, I'm afraid that these TV producers who try and make films about India in the days of the Raj, are completely out of touch with reality. Of course it's understandable, because there are so few of us "ancient ones," around who lived in India in the days of the Raj and they don't appear to have any advice of how life was lived in India. > > James Sinclair

    3. Sorry - I forget the original question! However, reverting to Familysearch we can find: Name: Sydney O'Hara Dawes Gender: Male Christening Date: 06 Jun 1878 Christening Place: Bangalore, Madras, India Birth Date: 22 Mar 1878 Father's Name: Frederick John Dawes <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGHC-9Z8> Mother's Name: Eliza Rebecca <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGHC-9ZD> GS Film number: 521866 <https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_number%3A521866> , Reference ID: N2, v 59 p 110 I suspect the O'Hart is a mis-transcription at some stage as all records I find have his middle name as "O'Hara" . His marriage to Mabel Lucy Elias is found under this name 8 Nov 1902 at Dhurumtollah, (Calcutta) Bengal. Also several children baptised. Unfortunately the reference which Jill gave is only to him as the spouse of Mabel Dawes at her burial 29 December 1919. The original (on Findmypast) describes her as the wife of Sidney O'Hara Dawes, Assistant W Leslie & Co.
