    3. Hi Maureen, Thanks for your slant on a medical posting to Lahore, it certainly puts an alternative light on on the posting mentioned. I'll follow up on the Fibiwiki Lahore page, I don't think the page was there when I wrote that -- part of a long conversation. I still haven't found my grandmother's death in Lahore or anywhere else. Mary HENVEY was her name. She obviously died between 1898 (marriage) and 1901 (Eng. census). All suggestions welcome. Regards, Mary >

    1. [INDIA] FW: Medics in India
    2. Maureen Evers
    3. Hello List I came across a post from last year called Medics in India where Mary [gandmlegge@gmail.com] asked: Is it possible an English Doctor, trained at St Mary's Hospital London could have been posted to Lahore as Superintendent of the Jail there as a punishment? This man's previous posting had been the Residency in Baghdad, and I was led to believe that Residency postings were the most desirable positions a young Doctor could achieve.*But* at this posting he fell madly in love with a married woman - shoch horror!! (my grandmother). They subsequently married after her divorce became absolute and went of to Lahore Jail as mentioned. A year later he was back in London - alone- on TPH obviously a sick man, he died a year later. So he was/they were certainly punished! I realize divorce ca.1900 was frowned upon - but am I reading too much into the above circumstances?? The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Lahore http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Lahore. Lahore was capital of the Punjab and consequently had a large number of Civil servants. It was also a large railway centre. The external links mentioned in the FIbiwiki page indicate that Lahore was a desirable place to live. One quote says "By the late nineteenth century, Lahore was a desirable posting for European officers and civilians due to its large size, moderate climate, and relatively cosmopolitan range of institutions and activities." So assuming the Jail was actually in Lahore, or reasonably accessible to Lahore, it seems it would be a desirable posting, not a punishment. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

    3. Hello List, Thank you Maureen for giving the Asiatic Register reference, which I didn't have. However, there are a couple of newspaper errors relating to my ancestor that I might mention. Lucy Clarke died on the 20 December 1804, Lat 30.34' north of the Cape of Good Hope. She was buried on St Helena 12 days later 1 January 1805. There is a commemorative plaque on the wall of St James Church, St Helena which gives Lucy's death date at age 29 years. The Colonel Clarke and his family were on board the 'David Scott' Thanks Helen (Brisbane) Hello List Frances may be interested in the following death entry from The Asiatic Annual Register: Volume 8 1806 Part 1, pages 183-184 which has some similarities to her George Cumming. The death occurred off the Cape of Good Hope. The body was preserved in spirits and this person was buried at St Helena seven months later. May 1805 : At sea, on board the David Stott, East Indiaman, off the Cape of Good Hope, Mrs. Clerk, wife to Lieut. Col. Clark, of the Madras establishment. Her amiable and condescending manners were such as must insure lasting respect,, and her death will be long regretted, particularly by her numerous and respectable friends at that presidency. She has left a respectable husband to bewail the loss of a most affectionate wife, and six infant children of a most attentive and fond parent. Her remains were preserved in spirits until the 31st December following, when they were interred at St. Helena, with all suitable attention, and followed to the grave by all the passengers of the fleet, and the greater part of the inhabitants of that island. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

    1. [INDIA] Fwd: danish east india company ships
    2. I am totally in awe of Maureen's ability to locate a reference to a woman who died at sea in 1806 and whose body was preserved in spirits until it could be buried at St. Helena many months later. I now have a photocopy from the ship's journal which records the death of George Cumming. The captain, Patrick Clark, has an execrable handwriting and his meaning is not perfectly clear to me. He says (under 23 December) "at 9 p.m. departed this life Mr. George Cumming in the civil service of the HEIC" A few lines later he writes "sealed up the effects of Mr. Cumming in the presence of the Gentlemen on board." So far so good, but it gets tricky on the next page, which is divided into four columms. The first column lists the names of the passengers. The second is called "when came on board." The third is "when left ship." The fourth is "where left." For George Cummings, under "when left ship" he writes Dec. 24th. Under "where left" he writes "at the Cape of Good Hope on board of a Danish Ship." Does this mean that the sealed up effects were transferred to the Danish ship or that the sealed effects and the body were transferred to the Danish ship? I am also wondering what these effects might have been. The EIC company ships were small and the Anna was very small. He couldn't have taken verymuch with him and I am pretty sure he knew he was not long for the world. I am presuming that his effects were money, some personal items like letters, some clothing. Or was there space somewhere on the boat for trunks? Would anybody have more solid information about what others took with them on these long homeward bound voyage at this point in time? Best, Frances
