We are trying to find documents for Gwendoline Maureen Patterson, born in 1938 in Puna, India. Father was Henry L Patterson, mother Gwendoline Susan Elizabeth. Would you be kind enough to extend your offer of searching at the BL? It would really get my friend's family history off to a great start, and would provide her mum with a really valuable document. Many Thanks Scott Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello Listers, I am trying to get some information about the person mentioned abo ve in the subject line. All I know about him comes from the libindx.com database, which is maintained by the Moray Heritage Council in Elgin. On that database, it is mentioned that Warden lived at Parkhill Stirlingshire and Calcutta. He was married in 1814. I have tried in the usual places to find out what his connection to Calcutta was and whether it was before or after his marriage, and after it was after his marriage, whether his wife went out with him. Best, Frances

I know they were indentured servants temple monks from India who were married. I believe his name was Mahat Mahand, later changed to 'William Branch Bernhardt', my great grandfather. His wife was named 'Jane Hall', but I do not know her real name. I am trying to find out information about that family in India. If anyone has any information I'd really appreciate it. Thank you. For Marian..... As far as I know, all the Master Attendants were Captains in the Indian Marine Service, and also used their official positions to trade for themselves with other Eastern ports, which would account for the post of Master Attendant being quite lucrative. Several of them seem to have either captained or owned country trade ships before settling down to a profitable job onshore. The families (Hindes, Meppen, Eaton, Norfor, Gahan, Van Someren and Mahoney) all seem to have been connected by marriage or by the country trade - which usually meant trading in opium for Batavia and China, with payment in tea. Capt. Robert Meppen of Coringa married a niece of Lydia Pascal, the first wife of my main interest, Godlieb Van Someren, merchant of Madras. Edmund Pascal (brother of Lydia) & wife Leonora Weeden had a daughter, b c 1820 Catherine Emmeline Pascal who married Captain Robert W Meppen, mariner, at Coringa on 1 Sep 1841. I recently bought a book "The East Indiamen" which has a fascinating chapter on the country trade but unfortunately no mention of master attendants or country trade merchants in it. Do contact me off list if you think I might have any more information of interest to you. Ciao, Liz Coreglia Antelminelli > >
Further to my earlier email re the Will of John THORPE that I was having trouble deciphering, the name of the Executor of the Will was the Right REVEREND Fennelly, Reverend being the word I could not work out. Also the placename Kennedy I was trying to find looks like Kennedy Estate and this ties in with the place of abode for John & Catherine when their daughter Catherine was born in 1863 showing John Thorpe was an Overseer in PWD in Kennedy, the baptism at Visagapatam & Wellington LDS Film 0521852. Another thing I have just found that I could not decipher previously was one of the witnesses on the Will was the Supt of Police and as my John Thorpe Jnr. worked as a Clerk for the Police in the PWD in Hyderabad I feel this actually is the Will of my John Thorpe Jnr. which is very exciting as I've had this Will for some years thinking it was not any of my ancestor's Will. Now have to find out who the Supt of Police was in 1867 in Madras when John Thorpe Jnr died and also who was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Madras in 1867, which looks appears to be The Right Reverend Fennelly just to prove the above. I also have to find Catherine his wife now as originally John Thorpe Jnr had 3 children with Nursannah a Muslim lady, so unless Nursannah was christianised and changed her name to Catherine, John may have had a wife named Catherine AS WELL!!!! I have not been able to find any marriage for John Thorpe to Catherine but have found 2 children namely Mary Ann b 1859 and Catherine b 1863 to a John & Catherine in Madras. This is so good, crossing my fingers this is the Will of my John Thorpe Jnr. Joan -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 7 million users fighting spam. Marcia, I don't see a connection with any of my relatives. Charles > >
Thank you Ron for your reply. It doesn't look anything like either of those 2 names but on trying to read the Will again with a magnifying glass it does look like Kennedy/Kenedy Estates and not a place Kennedy. An annexe to the Will was headed "In the High Court of Judicature at Madras" and stated John Thorpe was a European British subject and lately residing at Annacondah. I am not familiar with the terminology of Wills but it looks as though The Right ?? John Fennelly residing at No 2 Armenian St in Black Town, Madras, R/C Bishop of Madras was the executor of John Thorpe's Will. I'll go over the Will again and see if I can make anything more of it. Sorry about that fingers ahead of brain! Charles/Bev/Jenny Just picked up on the Robertson end - I have a William Donald Robertson who was in the HCIS military and died in England a Lt Col in 1866. I have traced two marriages and various births with some with no names. He was born in 1791, made Captain in 1822 married in 1830 to Maria Hendricka Cauldwell in Cape of Good Hope. Does that tie in with any of yours? Kind regards Marcia
My thanks to Liz for the information on Master Attendants. Capt. R.W. (Reinera William) Meppen was my husband's 4x Gt. Grandfather. He fathered 16 children so was no doubt grateful for the perks of his job as Master Attendant. In some notes by Frederick Daniel Meppen, Reinera's son b. 1819, he says his father "the late Von Meppen was Governor of Pulicat when it was a Dutch settlement and after it passed into the hands of the East India Company was appointed Master Attendant, Collector of Sea Customs, Justice of the Peace and Magistrate of Pulicat" I am not sure this is all fact. Frederick also said his grandfather was Baron von Meppen which Is unlikely from information I have as his grandafther went to India as a surgeon's assistant but did rise to become Chief Surgeon at the "castle at Negapatnam". Another son of Reinera, Capt. R.W. (Robert William) Meppen (b. 1815) was a Master Attendant of Bimlipitam. In which Navy were they Captains? Marion Meppen-Walter
Hello, The following film was made by members of the former royal family of Cochin & Travancore. All the parts are taken by members of the family. It does have English subtitles after the beginning. It is an Indian film quite unlike any other you have probably seen. http://www.imdb.com/video/wab/vi1369375769/ It is one of a series that they are making covering their history. It is one of the longest lasting royal families, they ruled long before the Portuguese turned up. Regards Nick Balmer

So far we've not found any one in the military in our Madden family, they seem to have been in the Police in India, probably river/port police as opposed to the normal sort.
