Her parents THOMAS & ELLEN (nee Berry) RUTLEDGE had the following children whose births I have been able to trace. Think that Thomas was a Writer. Calcutta. 4. ANN SOPHIA RUTLEDGE Birth 15 May 1831. CHRISTENING 30 Dec 1832. Calcutta. Wonder why there was such a long delay for the baptisms of Susan, Ebenezer and Ann, all being carried out on the same day. 30 Dec. 1832. Perhaps the parents were in a place where there was no priest? Susan was my Gt.Gt.Grandmother. Her husband/partner (can't find a marriage record) was Edmund Burke Ryan. (b. 1815 St. Pancras. England. -1850 d. Calcutta) Eldest son of Sir Edward and Lady Louisa Ryan , Chief Justice of Bengal. Edmund was an attorney and Public Notary, at the Supreme Court. For anyone whose colonial family moved to or dallied for a time in Singapore or Malaya, there's a searchable newspaper database 1831-2006 here: http://newspapers.nl.sg/Default.aspx Also covers events elsewhere in the Empire, including London and Burma, and in countries such as Thailand. BDMs, engagements, passenger lists, local theatricals, policemen and criminals - all the things you really wanted to know about Colonial life. Worth looking at, particularly for less-common surnames. Noel
Once again .. any help on these family names will be appreciated: PLOMER, PHILLIPS, PIGOTT, HURST, FITZHERBERT, DE ROZARIO, GILBERT. Location: Punjab, Bengal, Bihar & Orissa. Thanks. Joan

I have some information about a certain Major Rev. Edward Bates who went into Tibet with another missionary named Grant in the early 1920's. I would need to look it up for you. It might be better done off list. Tomas Christie.

Author: Inbal_Livne Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2513/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a PhD student researching Scottish missionaries who worked with Tibetans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, I am looking at objects these missionaries collected and later donated to Scottish museums. I would love to hear from anyone who may have ancestors who fit this description: worked with Tibetans in China/India (Darjeeling and Kalimpong areas) or in Tibet itself and collected objects which are either now in museums or still with family members. There are more people who fit this description than you might at first think and I am hoping that family histories will offer a key to their identity. Please reply to this post if you think an ancestor fits this bill and you are interested in helping my research. All participants will receive recognition and will hopefully learn something new about their ancestors! Cheers Inbal Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary Ann, I have been to find a village called 'Bari Bhari' or 'Bara Bhari' under Dist Sitapur -- Intermediate Panchayat Khairabad -- Panchayat Bari (or Bara) Bhari. To reach there follow the link http://www.evri.com/location/khairabad-sitapur-0x101dce . From here click on the third item from the bottom and look for page 956. Khairabad is about 8 km from Sitapur. (Panchayat, literally 'Council of five', is an old Indian word describing the council of village elders that ran common affairs of villages. Panchayats have been brought, in the modern times, into the administrative fold and are elected bodies, the constituents being the villagers.) Bara Bhari also comes up in http://villages.ws/india/uttar_pradesh/sitapur/bara_bhari_khairabad_0086625.htm and a few other sites. It appears to be such a small place that there is nothing else about it that is available on the internet. You can see it in wikimapia.org at coordinates 27.5002777778 N, 80.7513888889 E. Khairabad is SE of Sitapur along NH24. Near the southern end of Khairabad and on the other side of NH24 is the tiny hamlet of Bara Bhari, consisting of a few dozen houses. (NH is National Highway, something like the Interstate in the US. Arvind Kolhatkar, Toronto, July 28, 2010.

I am trying to trace any children my grandfather may have had in India, with his wife Maria Ethel Hearn Sutherland. They married on 13 July 1909, he was a Presumptive Widower aged 40 and she a spinster aged 35. I have been told he died 11 January 1932,in Madras but I don't have a death certificate, so if you found any information on that, it would be helpful. I also don't know when Maria died and if you could find that information I would be very grateful. Many, many thanks. Hello Liz Yes, I do have details of the marriage of Robert William Meppen to Catherine Emmeline Pascal, and also her death on the 9th May 1864 aged 46 years 9 months and 19 days. She is buried in the Flagstaff Cemetery, Bimlipitam and there is a marble slab with an inscription apparently in excellent condition. (Information from BACSA - via Lister Beverley). I have records of one son born to them: George Francis b. 23.7.1844 Bapt 8th May 1845. The sponsors include Wm Larkins Pascal. I don't recognise the other names you mention but the Meppen family were also connected to MCDOWELL, HICKEN, MOODY, BIRD, VAN INGEN and others. Marion
Hi all, Can anyone tell me what the post of Town Major entailed? I have Captain Edmund Pascal as Town Major of Madras in 1764 and wonder exactly what that means. Prior to that, in 1756 he was the Commandant at Fort St. David. And if there is anyone on the list researching the Pascal family of Madras, I would be very grateful if they would contact me. Ciao, Liz Coreglia Antelminelli
