    3. Hello List B. W-King said: I am looking for links to my G/G/Dad who was the BANDMASTER to the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars, I know as a fact he died in Meerut 1880. If he was a Bandmaster who trained as a bandmaster in England, it may be possible to get some records. Refer FIBIS Fibiwiki Bandmaster http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Bandmaster This web link is also about the 8th Hussars, and mentions the regiment at the time of the Second Afghan War, but there is no mention of Meerut. http://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armyunits/britishcavalry/8thhussars.ht m Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

    3. Hello, I am relatively new to this list and have not posted any queries yet.  But, I have used a few of the links mentioned in some emails and they have been helpful.  I am curious about the Meerut link mentioned in a recent post as my 2nd great grandfather, Charles Lee, was born there in 1825.  I would appreciate any information on this link.  Thanks very much. 2. Thanks maureen, alas not much help, i am looking for links to my G/G/Dad who was the BANDMASTER to the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars, I know as a fact he died in Meerut 1880, i have visited the Reg/ts Museum here in the U.K., but alas they hold no records or archives of the Reg/t in India, very frustrating, it would appear the Reg/t past has been neglected which i find strange, as they were a well known Reg/t well will have to try perhaps the MEERUT web site, last resort Cheers B.W-King

    2. Herbie Long
    3. Hi Joan My wife's grandfather was a John D'Rozario who appears to have been married 3 times. My father-in-law, Frederick, was from his third wife Rachel along with two sisters. His second wife may have been Ellen with two children. But no records of wife one or children. I wondered if your D'Rozarios might be from the same family?!? TIA Herbie

    1. [INDIA] John Macdonald b abt 1790 & Charlotte Mayfield b 1789
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: plasticwindow Surnames: Macdonald Mayfield Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2514/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Charlotte was the daughter of a British army sergeant William Mayfield and she and her siblings were born in various places, she was born in Guernsey. The first child of John Macdonald and Charlotte Mayfield, Jane Macdonald was born on 09 April 1811 in Poonamallee, Tamil Nadu, Madras, India according to IGI and later Scottish censuses. Subsequent children were born in Scotland. I can find no record of the Macdonald/Mayfield marriage and I wonder what John Macdonald, variously described as 'druggist, chemist & medical practitioner' was doing in India? It seems more natural for Charlotte to be there as the daughter of a soldier. I haven't researched any India connections before so shall be grateful for any advice. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.

    1. [INDIA] Troop ships.
    2. L & J Buchanan
    3. So many of my rellies relate to soldiers who came out on troop ships from England, Ireland and maybe America too, before 1800. I wondered what such a voyage would be like so I googled and got an interesting site about a man who worked to improve the condition of the soldiers camps, hospitals, troop ships, slave ships and convict ships. There was even mention of a ship one of my rellies came out on and it was referred to as "the Hell Ship". So try googling THE SOLDIER'S FRIEND SIR JEREMIAH FITZPATRICK, INSPECTOR OF HEALTH FOR LAND FORCES Its an essay by Richard L Blanco. Cheers, Len Buchanan

    1. Re: [INDIA] Troop ships.
    2. This was an absolutely fascinating article. It made me wonder how different, if at all, life on board one of these ships--such as the Anna of Bengal, mentioned in the text--would have been for the civilian men, women and children, including their servants. (I mention the Anna because one of the people I am following died on board the Anna; I do know that he was in poor health when he boarded the ship, however....) Thanks for bringing it to the attention of the list. Frances ,
