    1. [INDIA] Who Do You Think You Are?
    2. Ruth in Brum
    3. With grovelling apologies to non-UK TV licence holders - don't forget to watch the BBC 1 Who do You Think You Are? programme tonight at 9 p.m. Here is the blurb from the website: "Actor Rupert Penry-Jones has made his name playing dashing, quintessentially English heroes. But his family background is very different. His mother, actress Angela Thorne, was born in Karachi, when it was part of British India. Rupert doesn't know much about his Raj relatives, but there is a family story that there is Indian blood in the family. Rupert is keen to find out the truth. He remembers his grandfather on his mothers' side, Bill, who was a doctor in India, and decides to start his search there. Bill was a doctor in the Indian Medical Service and saw action in the Second World War, in the Italian Campaign at Monte Cassino. Rupert is keen to find out more about the Field Ambulance corps that Bill commanded, who were supporting the 8th Indian Division at the battle. He travels to Italy, and is humbled and impressed by his grandfather's unsung heroism. Rupert wants to know when the Indian connection with his family first started. A trail of documents reveal that his great-great-great-great grandfather, Thomas, was the first Thorne in India. Rupert decides to follow in his footsteps to India. He travels to Allahabad, and discovers that Thomas was involved in the Great Indian Rebellion. but Rupert will have to go back even further if he's to discover the truth." (In my family the dark eyes and hair are from our Norman-French ancestors, - but of course!) Best, Ruth in Brum (Birmingham, England)

    1. [INDIA] Anthony Baker
    2. L & J Buchanan
    3. Hi All, I was wandering, even though I have posted something like this a long time ago, if anyone has encountered the name Anthony Baker who had children in 1876 and 1889? He might have been from Bangalore (maybe the goldfields) or Bombay ( railways?). I have found no trace of him apart from 3 of his children saying, when they married, that their father was Anthony Baker. Cheers, Len Buchanan

    3. Hello List A recent FIBIS Blog advised that the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1861-1941 is now available online through Ancestry.co.uk. Some wills proved in England relate to persons with links to India or, indeed, those who have actually died in India. You can read about it in the FIBIS Blog http://blog.fibis.org/?p=224, or the Ancestry link is http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1904 The link has also been added to the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Wills, Administrations, Probate and Inventories" which gives an overview of the topic. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Wills,_Administrations,_Probate_and_In ventories Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

    1. [INDIA] Scott family
    2. Ann Johnston
    3. I am still looking for the parentage of Arthur Scott (1820-1857) who was killed at the seige of Jhansi and his wife Ruth Callaghan who he married at Nagpur in 1840. Their eldest son Edmund Arthur (sometimes called Arthur Edmund) (1843-1882) appears to have married a relative, possibly a cousin, called Ann Scott (1852-? ) daughter of William David Scott and Sarah Ann (nee Bradshaw) of Madras, and grandaughter of a James and Anne Scott . Edmund Arthur Scott was a school master attached to the E I Railway. I have found 2 children so far for him and his wife Ann Scott ; Frederick Walter Scott (1869-1918) and Christiana Blanche Ruth Scott (1873-?) who married Robert William Nessor in 1893. Any additional information on any of these people would be very much appreciated Ann Johnston
