This book was first published in 1995 and then in India in 1997 by OUP as an "Oxford India Paperback", but I believe that the author was based at a Canadian University. I have a copy of the book and the name WHITTAKER does not appear in the index. Cheers Sylvia

    3. Hi listers I am hoping that someone can tell me the difference between the Calcutta Great Jail and the Calcutta House of Correction? My interest is in the House of Correction in the 1850s. Also, does anyone know if any records survive and where they might be kept? I have searched the British Library catalogue without any success. Many thanks Lynden

    3. Yes, an interesting programme, but how lucky are the subjects of these programmes to have expert researchers working for them! One of my ancestors was born in Vepery, Madras in 1800 and I am pretty certain that her mother was Indian. Does anyone know of a researcher in that area who would look at the original Church records for me? Mary

    1. [INDIA] Portuguese/Catholic Church Records-Bengal
    2. NANCY LILLY
    3. I understand that the Roman Catholic churches in Bengal were under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Goa. Does anyone know if records (baptisms/marriages/burials) were also copied to the Portuguese Church in Goa? If so, are these records available in Goa or online? I believe I have exhausted all avenues with the British Library. I am at the end of my rope trying to find the missing pieces to the puzzle of my family history! I want to cover all bases before I give up completely. So, please! any suggestions or comments would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance, Nancy Rixon Lilly (researching RIXON, BOTELHO, D'CRUZE/DECRUZE/D'CRUZ, PAUL, D'SILVA/DESILVA/, BEATSON, LUCAS, CONNOR et al in BENGAL)

    1. [INDIA] motor transport/road infrastructure in rural areas, 1920-1960
    2. Stefan Tetzlaff
    3. Hello all, I had earlier send an information request regarding oil comanies' operations in South Asia between the 1900s to 1960s, to which some of you thankfully responded. I am now more and more shifting my interest towards the early history of motor transport and improved road infrastructure in rural areas of northern India/southern and eastern Pakistan between the mid-1920s to early 1960s. This includes different sorts of motor transport such as bus services and goods transport by lorries. You may want to look at some of my earlier discussions for further explanation and visual evidence http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/pre-1950/85030-early-20th-century-road-infrastructure-bus-transport-services-automobile-traffic.html http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/commercial-vehicles-india/85989-early-use-lorries-tractors-etc.html Does anybody on this list have an interest in these issues? Can anybody provide historical information on developments in the time under review? I would be very grateful for information on this subject from eye witnesses of the time or their descendants, be they local transport users and operators, corporate or governmental organisations or from any other field. Please do get in touch! Best wishes, Stefan

    3. Hi Listers: I am still trying to solve the murder mystery of my gg grandfather John WHITTAKER in the 1860s in India. He was born in about 1827 in Oulton, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. A joiner, cabinetmaker, builder by occupation. We recently heard a new clue that he was employed by various railway contractors, and so my cousin found the following information in several Almanacs. (see below). 1857: no listing for John WHITTAKER 1858: John Whittaker, carpenter, Jackson's Railway Works, Nassick (now called Nashick). Jackson's = Jackson amd Whyte's, Railroad Contractors, Nassick. 1859: no listing for J.W. 1860 & 1861: John Whittaker, Timber Contractor to Messrs. Lee, Watson, & Aiton, Railway Contractors, Baitool and Oommrawattee Does anyone know anything about any of these railway contractors? I read in the Rootsweb archives of a book called "Building the Railways of the Raj - 1850 to 1900" by Ian J. Kerr, but as it's out of print, I have been unable to find a copy to either read or buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Marina Ontario, Canada

    2. Hilda Payne
    3. Dear Listers, In times past I found Cathy Day's website of "Family History in India" such a wonderful resource. I really cut my teeth on her pages! Much of her material is now incorporated in the FIBIS website but I still like her descriptions and re-visiting her archived site is like visiting an old friend. A few months ago, the link to the archived site was posted on the Raj List but for those of you who missed it, here it is again, http://web.archive.org/web/20070406043058/members.ozemail.com..au/~clday/index.html or if that is too long try this shorter link   http://tinyurl.com/22uq7h6 Good wishes, Hilda Payne
