Hi everyone, Those of you who missed the recent episode of Who Do You Think You Are? featurning Rupert Penry Jones will be pleased to learn that it is being shown again tonight, 20th August on BBC2 at 7pm. Best wishes Paul Rowland The Indiaman Magazine http://www.indiaman.com
Point taken Ruth -n Brum!! However, there are many of us here DownUnder who have grandfathers/great uncles or great great grandfathers who served in the British India forces over the years and later migrated to Australia or New Zealand or they may have travelled FROM NZ or Aus to the UK and enlisted in the British Army and consequently been involved in conflicts etc in India so these documentaries are of as much interest to us as to the Brits back home. Given that - we'll be waiting with bated breath for the programs to be eventually shown here. Regards, Ainslie.
I totally agree with Ruth of Brum--well I came from there too....{;}}> Instant research, fantastic documents, pretty venues.....hours of material on the cutting room floor. It was said that they did not make a programme about a famous UK interviewer as his background was to ordinary!!!!! As a UK BBC Licence Holder I wonder if they might just do my research for me....... Though I can see the reason behind blocking non-UK outlets...it keeps our licence fee down! Cheers Peter Rogers
Hio brinds sorry not to reply sooner, i have issue 33 of the regiment, but what i am after is info on the 8th K/R/I/Hussars Band which my G/G/dad was the Bandmaster, & their time in INDIA very little has transpired as yet, will keep looking Cheers B.W-King
Ruth, I think you will find that most of us were replying to Peter's message about being able to view the episode on the net....not what you wrote. Cheers De in Aus Searching for RAYMOND, HARDIE, BURNS, WALLIS, DAVIDSON, WHITE, ALLEN, OWEN/S, LARENGO, PATHE, SCOTT, WICKENS, MAYBERY, WILKINS.
Folks, Please forgive me but... THIS is actually what I sent to the list: "With grovelling apologies to non-UK TV licence holders" Every year, we in the UK, have a new set of people whose family history has been researched - by experts- FOR them - to make an entertaining show on the BBC. The BBC shows these WDYTYA programmes in the UK to people who should have bought a TV licence - currently a colour TV Licence costs 145.50 GB pounds. If successful, i.e. great viewing figures, the BBC hopes to sell the programmes - for money - to overseas TV companies. (The US now has their own version on US TV. I think Canada does too.) It doesn't make much business sense to allow folks NOT resident in the UK to watch the programmes for free on their computers - does it? The website automatically checks your ISP which tells it where you are, which is why your access is blocked. I am very frustrated that I can't access certain databases because I don't have a University library ticket number, or because I live in the UK rather than say the US, I can't view certain Google book pages.... It makes me cross but there's nowt I can do about it. Incidentally, whilst watching this particular episode, I shouted at the TV on more than one occasion. For instance, the India Office is never empty, although this is the second time it has been shown like that... would that one could waltz into the National Archives and be given the exact records one needs.... research is NOT that easy as we all know. The boxed set should be available soon for those of you who can't wait for your TV stations to buy in the series - I must say I thought Dervla Kirwan's was fascinating two weeks ago.... What a rat I am;-) Mea Culpa!!! Best, Ruth in miserable, wet Brum. I am not sure how they can block it technically but evidently they can. I hope that it can be screened in Australia and elsewhere eventually Good Hunting! Hi Peter, I tried to download the program but had an online screen message that it was unavailable for overseas viewers. I had the same message when trying to view it again after reading your message. I am in Adelaide, Sth Australia. Our Australian TV stations don't recquire that we have licenses in order to view programs. Cheers Ainslie.

Hi folks, I am avidly searching for more information regarding my grandparents - James Jesse Stroud and his wife the former Sarah Gatley, daughter of William Gatley. of Stockport, England. Witnesses to their wedding at the Colaba Wesleyan Church, Bombay in 1906 were: J.W. Burbridge Charlotte Burbridge D.Ella Smith and the celebrant was Charles Ryder Smith (signature has him as C..Ryder Smith) I understand that my grandmother was employed as a Lady's Companion, my grandfather a Staff Sergeant in the Viceroy's Band. Stroud's residence at time of marriage states "West End Hotel, Simla" and Sarah's as 4 Heavily Grove, Buxton Rd, Stockport, England. I'd love to know if the descendants of the witnesses to the marriage are on this list and if they can throw further light onto the life and times of the era - I am assuming Ryder Smith was a military padre and that Burbridge was also a member of the military. Every now and again I strike it lucky and get another snippet of information that brings history to life! Cheers Ainslie.

I have not seen much comment from overseas listers on the recent (Monday Evening in the UK) BBC transmission of the Who Do You Think You Are? relating to the family history of Rupert Penry-Jones (TV Actor) Some seven generations of his ancestors lived and served in British India and the Researchers have done a great job in researching them. For those who may not have seen it, it may be seen now on the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk Enter Who Do You Think You Are into the search box and click the play button Rosie Llewellyn-Jones features highly and one or two FIBIS members helped by guiding researchers. (If you are very quick, you may see us featured in the credits at the end.) Good Viewing! Peter Bailey Chairman Families in British India Society www.fibis.org

It has to be remembered that these programmes are contrived and that the aim essentially is to provide entertainment. Would that it were really that easy to find what you were looking for!! The original letters used in the programme are probably either at the British Library or at the special collection at SOAS [School of Oriental & African Studies] at London University, but were presented from India to give local colour to the programme. Much of the information said to have been found in India was probably available at the British Library, but the programme would not have appeared to be as interesting. Regards to the list. Anthony West.
Hi I too was wondering how the researcher managed to get letters that were sent to the wife in Madras??..........................really weird I am trying to find out what happened to my g/grandparents, both seem to have died on 9 April 1901 Does anyone know if there was a disaster of any kind on that date?? Their estate was managed by the Administrator General for the 4 children As they were Funeral Undertakers I would assume they had their own grave but no sign of any It has had me mystified for over 25 yrs........I keep looking, and even thought they may have had a holiday in UK or Australis but no luck there either Avril Anderson
