Hello, A relative is listed on the Indian Army Quarterly List (Jan 1912) as an assistant surgeon, 4th class, Indian Medical Services. Under Remarks it says "Wellington." Would this be his place of birth or referring to something else? The only Wellington I know of is New Zealand. Thanks, Melanie
You've all seen Maureen Evers' postings with references to the Fibiwiki. In fact, Maureen is a major contributor to the wiki so is well positioned to demonstrate how it works. The South Asian Research Group of the Society of Australian Genealogists meets 1.30 - 3.30pm on Saturday 28th August at Richmond Villa, 120 Kent Street, Sydney. We are fortunate that Maureen has agreed to present to the group. All are welcome. There is a small attendance fee of $8 for members and $12 for non-members, and you are encouraged to book. See: http://tinyurl.com/28pdbbx "Fibiwiki is a wiki where you can read and share information helpful for researching ancestors in India. It not only contains research guides, but also lists sources, and general background information about the culture, society and history of India during the period from 1600 to 1947. Member Maureen Evers is a major contributor to the wiki and many of us have benefited from her articles. She will show us how to get the most out of the fibiwiki and also how to edit or add new articles. " Sylvia
Can any reader help ? I have managed to trace my Gt Gt Gt Gt Grandfather Robert Monckton Grant ( b. in Quebec c1760 d. London 1814) to his srvice with the HEIC Army between 1781, sailing to India on the EIC vessel "Locko" in 1781 and serving in several Batallions/Regiments of the Madras Native Infantry between 1781 & 1808 but regrettably I have become 'stuck' with specific details of what he may have been doing or where he was posted or the wars he may have been involved in during his time in India .(1781-1810 He had a son named James Ludovic Grant Born 17 May 1807 & Baptised on 21 July 1807 in Quilon. On the Baptism record is indicated a wife Maria Tressennah (deceased) Can anyone please suggest where I can look to find [1] more detailed information about the career of Lt Col R.M Grant ( I know he faced a Court Martial in 1807 but was acquitted) and on what ship he and his son would have returned to England. [2] the marriage / death or origin of Maria Tressennah [3] Is this possibly a Portuguese name ? I have seen a Silver Salver at a relative's house reading Presented to Lt Col R.M Grant by Officers at Travancore etc ...... Any pointers to avenues of research most gratefully welcomed Richard

Hi Mark What was her husband's name? I noticed a marriage in 1879 of Alice E Campbell to Patrick J O'Sullivan on the FIBIS site. If it was Patrick J O'Sullivan, could her husband have returned to India as there is a birth in 1890 in the Times of India as follows: Jan 8th at Jullundur the wife of Surgeon Major PJ O'Sullivan MD Medical Staff of a daughter. Therefore she must have died after 1890 IF this is the correct family. Hello List Mike said: I found the following following a reference in an earlier email on the list today. I wondered if anyone can assist me in any way regarding this book. I am in New Zealand and cannot see it being readily available here!!! Record details Name: William Henry COOMBS Event type: Biography Start year: 1943 End year: 1947 Biographical notes: Major; Recruiting Officer, Poona. Transcribed by: British Library India Office Records Reference: L/AG/29/1/225 (AG 2288/44) The reference is not to an actual book, but to a record in the India Office collection at the British Library. Hello List Mark said: Any ideas on the death record of an Edith or Alice Edith O'Sullivan, married to a Surgeon in the British Army Medical Service? It would have been between 2 August 1879 and February 1889. There are no records in the Presidencies' funeral records nor in the English death certificates (he was posted home between December 1883 and March 1886).It would have been probably before 1883 in Bombay, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Murree or Sialkot; or else in 1887 in Rangoon. Has Mark tried the British Army Overseas indexes, accessible through a Family relatives.com link on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Chaplains Returns? http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Chaplains_Returns As am as I am aware, these would include Catholic deaths but perhaps someone knows definitely. They are typical of what may be found for a soldier of this type. He entered service in a regiment of the British Army that was sent to India. Whilst there, he opted for transfer to the "Unattached List" and entered the India Army Commissariat Department. His papers, including his British Army enlistment papers which we were shown, would have been transferred with him. No doubt the rest of his career was set out in some of the other papers, which we were not shown with the exception of those relating to his duty as a Durbar organizer. Much more fascinating were the letters written by Sgt. Major Thomas Johnstone to his wife in Madras, and Johnstone's photo. These were shown to Rupert by the lady historian in Allahabad. There was an implication that she had come across these in some archive in Allahabad. A number of colleagues and I believe that this is most improbable. We agreed that what we saw were photocopies of originals which probably came from the family's own archives, although this was not stated. I am reliably informed that they are not to be found in the Private Papers (formerly European Manuscripts) in the India Office Records. The excellent photo of Johnstone in uniform must have been taken before his death in 1857. The original may well have been an emulsion-on-glass and so what we saw was also a more recent copy. Hello: I am new to the India List and am hoping that someone can help me knock down a brick wall. I am not looking for a family, births, marriages or deaths but am trying to identify what military unit my gt grandfather, William Henry Button, served with. I have looked through the medal rolls but can't identify which W Button is the correct one and I am hoping that some family lore might lead to identifying him William Henry Button (b 1883, Nottingham) initially joined the army to fight in the Boer War but was bought out by his parents. He later joined the army (maybe at outbreak of WW1 as he was still at family household in 1911 census) and during WW1 served with the forces in France, Salonica and the Dardenelles. He also served in India for seven years as Quartermaster Sargeant. And while in India he was flyweight boxing champion three years running. I am hoping that the boxing title might lead to identifying his unit. I tried contacting the Army Boxing Association but got no response. Can anyone on the list provide any clues? Thanks Mel Smith Whitby, Omtario, Canada

Hello List Ros said: I have found Dr, Mr, Mrs Woodford/e and 2 children detailed in the passenger lists for several ships travelling between the UK and Madras between 1829 and 1838. Can anyone recommend where I go to get fuller names or details for the detailed on the listings? I have looked on the ships list website but most of the vessels are not listed let alone associated with a passenger. I have also looked at Ancestry and Findmypast also without success. The FIBIS Fibiwiki page Ships' Journals http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Ships%27_Journals gives details of records at the British Library for voyages mainly to 1834 There are also a couple of other references to records at the British library in a British Library webpage accessible from the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Maritime Service under External links http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Maritime_Service Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
I have just watched part of the repeat programme as I was interested to know about Grandfather Thorne. It seems he joined as a private in the 1870s and in spite of watching closely when his army career was shown I could not make out his promotion path! I suspect that he was in the Supply & Transport branch - formerly Commissariat Dept- as he was finally an "Hon" Major and this title was, as in earlier times, given to men above the rank of Conductor; as was my Gt.Grandfather a Captain. Did anyone with 20/20 vision manage to view the papers please? Peter Rogers
Any ideas on the death record of an Edith or Alice Edith O'Sullivan, married to a Surgeon in the British Army Medical Service? It would have been between 2 August 1879 and February 1889. It would have been probably before 1883 in Bombay, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Murree or Sialkot; or else in 1887 in Rangoon.

Hi all, I am new to research in India so I apologise for these questions. Based on information in several UK census entries, I believe that James Edward WOODFORDE was born in Madras in 1830. However having searched the beta version of familysearch I have only been able to confirm that a son was born to a Mrs Woodford in February of 1830. So my question is can anyone suggest anywhere else I can look for the birth registration of James Woodforde and more details for the February 1830 birth to Mrs Woodford? Many thanks Ros
Ros I suggest you next try searches at the following two sites: 1. British Library - http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/ [1] 2. FIBIS - http://www.fibis.org [2] The first reveals James Woodforde baptised 1804 in India, Asst. Surgeon 1829, and a child born in Madras in 1835. Also has details of the passengers arrviing in India that you query in your other post. The fibis search has a little more of the same but in particular records the will of James Woodforde (senior) held at the National Archives. You should be able to get a copy and I imagine will be quite interesting. I am assuming these Woodfordes are the ones your are looking for, it appears likely at first glance but you need to verify this of course. It is also worth searching on the name at Google books (books.google.com) as a surgeon is likely mentioned in many of the journals and peridoicals etc. that have been digitised there. Regards Simon.
