    3. To all Listers in Australia, I just noticed while watching the above BBC programme on Jason Donovan that one of the ancestors that was mentioned was a Simeon Lyons. He married Elisabeth Gertrude O'Brien in Tasmania in 1879. She was born in Calcutta. Perhaps one of our Australian Listers also has this O'Brien family in their tree ? Keith Cornelius England.

    3. I have a death record for Janet Brown,1863, Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland, and it says she is the widow of Major William Brown 69 Bengal, N. I. She was getting some sort of pension, I believe on his service. Does anyone have any information on Major William Brown from Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland? He and Janet married in Stewarton in 1813. I don’t know when or where he died. Their only child was born later in 1813. I cannot find the family in the 1841 Scotland census, but I do find Janet and her daughter and family in the 1851 Scotland census and Janet is listed as “annuitant”. In 1861 census, she is listed as “widow of a Major.” Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you. Elaine Sharp Sacramento CA USA

    3. Rebecca I got the baptism of John Algeo Bullock Campbell (Colin Campbell's son) when I visited the British Library India Room but I had found it first online here http://indiafamily.bl.uk/ui/fulldisplay.aspx?recordid=014-000040676. Colin died 1818 at Malligaum near Bombay - I got this from the Bombay Almanac  - Google Books. This is not long before Thomas so check the records for that side of India. I would love to know what happened to their widows and children. I suspect the children might have gone into one of the orphanages either in Bombay or Calacutta. There were several posts about orphanages a few months ago. My chap John pops up later in Cawnpore on his marriage. He is: 25 Status: head Asst., Commis. Office, Benares. Your chap  George turns up in Tasmania! Presumably Eleanor - daughter of Surgeon Penfield would have been looked after by her family or married again and been OK. I think my Colin's wife was of mixed blood and probably brought up in an orphange herself. There is one possible record of a subsequent remarriage to a fellow captain in the 67th who died very soon after. Have you looked for a subsequent re-marriage for Eleanor My e-mail address is f.ross1@btinternet.com Frances

    1. [INDIA] Capt James Stewart/Stuart died 1779 at Karla India
    2. John A.Thomas
    3. Dear Bosham: Many thanks for your response. I am beginning to get this same feeling and ask myself as to whether this man really existed!! My inability to trace this man even in the Presidency Lists of Army personnel gives me the feeling that things do not seem very right. He could not have been total blacked out of the records. And if so for what reason?? If the British thought of him as a hero then why have they never mentioned him in their records? There is mention of a Capt Stewart with Duff: * History of the Maharathas: James Grant Duff: : vol 2: Chapter 12 : page 244 onwards: Bombay: Printed at the Exchange Press, Fort: 1863. This may reflect what Duff had picked up from the then existent records. * I have also another reference to him in a Bombay Presidency gazette note mentioning him. I will have to check this out again.** On the UK side I have thought that the name Stewart may suggest a Scottish origin and have checked the name and date out with the Black Watch regiment whose archivist came out with no answers!! ** I should like to contact Col Anil Athale. Would you have his email address or his postal address? *I have been told of Kincaid's book and will explore that also.* ** I intend to peruse this till I am able to have some answers. With Warren Hastings at the helm of things at that time it is possible that the recording of history was quite vitiated. Hastings was none too happy about the Treaty of Wadegaon and eventually had Carnac among others dismissed for having signed this Treaty. And Carnac was no small man in the British military hierarchy!! Thank you for your time. Sincerely John* * * * -- John Dr. John A.Thomas,MD,FRCPath, FAMS

Author: CBateman6607 Surnames: Palmer, Bateman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2526.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Harold. My father, Richard (Dick) Bateman was also a fireman in Bombay at the time of the explosion. He was on leave, moving house, at the time of the first explosion, rushed to the docks, and survived the second explosion. There are articles on the internet about the explosion. My father joined the Bombay fire service after evacuating from Burma. He joined other firemen, including the chief, I think, that he knew from Burma. Are you in Scotland? I'll be visiting Glasgow in a couple of weeks. After the war my father went back to Burma and after Burma's independence, he went to Glasgow where he was a fireman. Sorry none of this is of any help regarding Harold Palmer's life in India. Regards. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Thank you very much Frances, you've been a great help. I found Thomas in various Army Lists through Google Books too - 1818 (both he and your Colin mentioned), 1820 (only Thomas), 1822 and 1823, although Thomas died in Bombay on the 12th of November, 1822. I've no idea where to even start trying to find any info on his death. I didn't know when he was promoted to Captain, so thank you for that info. I've already searched FIBIS, Family Search and the British Library site - not much joy there I'm afraid, but the Museum looks very promising and I'll definitely get in touch with them. While Googling, I came across this information regarding where the 67th was at any given time - this is how I surmised that George was born in Dinapore. You may be interested in it. http://www.ans.com.au/~rampais/genelogy/india/indexes/kitz.htm I guess my idea that George was born in Dinapore (also in 1809) was probably correct, seeing as how you also have a birth there in the same year. Did you use an on-line search of the British Library India Office Records to get the birth certificate, or did you just contact the Library and ask for a search? I know the family was originally from Ireland because Thomas's son, George, (who was apparently born in India, or so several people researching the family mentioned on RootsChat) came out to Tasmania as a pioneer settler from Co. Westmeath. George's brother-in-law, James Fenton, also a pioneer settler in northern Tasmania, wrote several books regarding the early Tasmanian years and gives quite a bit of information on George which was very helpful. The Irish records seem very user unfriendly and scarce though, and I haven't made any headway in Ireland since. I'm really struggling to get any further with this line, especially as nothing comes up in any of the online databases for them but I appreciate your help very much and you've certainly given me some further avenues to explore. If I come across anything which I think you could also use in your tree, I'll forward it to you. 3. There are two sources you could try. One is an online article written by a well known expert on Anglo-Maratha History Col. Anil Athale (retired) who questions the very existence of the brave ''Ishtooart''. You might like to get in touch with him and discuss further. See this story dated February 14, 2003: http://www.rediff.com/news/2003/feb/14spec.htm and also this - http://www.indianexpress.com/oldStory/18886/ The second is an old book - not online as yet, but a copy was available for sale here: ''Ishtur Phakde. A Gallant Englishman and other studies'' by KINCAID, C.A., 142pp, Bombay 1917. http://tinyurl.com/34gg3qz or http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=2775833138&searchurl=bt.x=65&bt.y=11&sts=t&tn=Ishtur+phakde%3A+a+gallant+Englishman+and+other+studies Kincaid, as we know, was a great Indophile Briton. I have no idea about what he says (about Stewart) in this book, though. --- Harshawardhan_Bosham Nimkhedkar ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arvind Kolhatkar" John, <<" "Ishtur Phakra" means "Gallant Fighter">> The phrase 'Ishtur Phakra' or, more accurately 'IShTur FakDaa' is well-known to older speakers of Marathi, the local language of the area, and means "Stuart the Brave".
