The LDS beta site has improved matters by including quite a lot more, but nonetheless quite a few records I have found are still not indexed there or at the BL. Assuming you have exhausted the online resources, you need to go back to the British Library. Hard work comes next I'm afraid. But rewarding if you succeed. You should try the bound written indexes to Madras BMD as they contain material that still may not be online. These are on the left just after you enter the reading room. Some things found in there are not in the BL online facility or old IGI searches, although some have appeared on the new LDS site. After that you can try looking through the films. One reason for the indexes being brief is that not all the registers have been indexed. To find what you want is hard work - sitting down with the film at the BL and going through frame by frame. They are very hard to decipher and it is maddening, you keep thinking you may have missed something. Of course it may not even be there. Thankfully I had a friend who was very thorough and proved very good at hunting things down. You do not mention the rank of your ancestor. In my experience, especially when you go back to 1800, officers have the most details recorded, NCOs next, rank and file last of all. That applies to military and civil records. Another place to look, for officers, is the contemporary periodicals, these seem to start up around late 18th century. For example, there is the Asiatic Annual Register, 1799 onwards. Also I have found NCOs (sergt. major) marriages listed in Bengal Past and Present during the 1790s. I'm assuming you can get to the BL. If not, you can still identify the relevant films and borrow them through the LDS. Cheers Simon.
Hello Clive, someone has already done extensive work on this tree - see http://www.charmainezoe.com/ancestors.pdf so it is probably worth contacting the author - there are a few links via Facebook or her guestbook on http://www.charmainezoe.com/ good luck, Mark
Have you tried the LDS Beta site (or the Pilot site if you prefer that format) A quick search of births under both John and Samuel turned up several hits as did the the marriages. There is potentially quite a bit of information to be gained, if one seaches carefully. Hello: I posted this request a month ago and have not had any response. Nor did I see the message on the list, however, I see it is in the archives attached to another totally different subject. I am hoping that someone can help me knock down a brick wall. I am not looking for a family, births, marriages or deaths in India but am trying to identify what military unit my gt grandfather, William Henry Button, served with. I have looked through the medal rolls but can't identify which W Button is the correct one and I am hoping that some family lore might lead to identifying him. William Henry Button (b 1883, Nottingham) initially joined the army to fight in the Boer War but was bought out by his parents. He later joined the army (maybe at outbreak of WW1 as he was still at the family household in 1911 census) and during WW1 he served with the forces in France, Salonica and the Dardenelles. He also served in India for seven years as Quartermaster Sargeant. And while in India he was flyweight boxing champion three years running. I am hoping that the boxing title might lead to identifying his unit. I tried contacting the Army Boxing Association but got no response. Can anyone on the list provide any clues or suggestions where to look? Thanks Mel Smith Whitby, Omtario, Canada
Good morning Listers, Not sure if this will reach anyone - I logged a request several weeks ago and have not received a single comment from anywhere. But here goes- An ancestor was Born & Baptized in Quilan Madras Presidency in 1807 The mother of my ancestor was mentioned in the Baptism record (Brit Library) as Maria Tressenah (deceased). I have lately discovered that the name Tressenah could be Trezinha or Terzinha possibly of Portuguese or Indo/Portuguese origin. Where can I search for a possible marriage between this lady and my ancestor who was serving with the 2nd Bn. 6th Regt. Madras Native Infantry (HEIC Army) at the time ? Richard
Thanks Maureen, I shall try what you have suggested. Regards. Could anyone on the list tell me when the British began sending civil servants to work in Burma. I have a number of relations who were born in Madras and Calcutta but died in Burma. Is there somewhere that I might be able to find the names of those who were sent and when they were sent. Thank you, David Cornelius
After completing 47 years in the British Army I have decided that it is time to find information regarding my family in the past. I am starting with my Grandfather Samuel Mullen who was born in India on the 8 Dec 1877 in Wellington India. I have managed to get a copy of his Baptism Certificate and his father declares himself as John Mullen, Pte 48th Regt. John Mullen wife is down as Amelia. The church was St Georges Church Wellington Bks India. The Family settled down in the Jhansi area and I understand around 1933/4 Samuel and his wife died and the two boys (one being my Grandfather Joseph Mullen) went into an orphanage and the six girls into a convent. Samuel wife was a Marie Eileen Blance De Courcey Born 1882 and they were married in Jhansi in Aug 1906. I would be more then grateful for any information or for someone to point me in the right direction to obtain more information on my Great Grandfather , who was in the 48th Regt in 1877, and of my Grandfather Samuel who may have been a guard working on the Indian Railways. Hello List The following appeared in a recent FIBIS blog. "Sri Lanka, Colombo-District Dutch Reformed Church Records, 1677-1990 The latest Familiysearch.org beta website update includes the first set of records from Sri Lanka. Visitors to the website can now browse 33965 images of baptisms, marriages, memberships, deaths, minutes, correspondence and other records of Sri Lanka, Colombo District Dutch Reformed Church Records, 1677-1990. Unfortunately these records are only browsable at present and cannot be searched using the search facility". The links are in the FIBIS blog http://blog.fibis.org/?p=273 Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

Brian and Herbie Have found some Faure's in South Africa in late 1700 that link into my tree - Abraham Faure 1795 -1875 his children Catarina, Jacobus, William, Aletta, Gertruida and Hendrik. Might you be looking in the wrong place? One of the children is listed as being born in the Netherlands. My lot were in the Army, from HEIC, and one of them spent a long time in South Africa which is how he married a cousin of this family. Kind regards Marcia
Hello List Thelma said: Dear Peter - many thanks for the informaton received - Peter Glendower was my grandfather - William his father - and the original Peter (who we were told was Dutch) hopefully will show up in the film 521839 - if you will be having this film out at any time in the future - or anyone else on the list - would be so grateful to have any further information. He married in Vepery in 1805 Hannah Lindsay- when I visited the BL in earlier days of research found this marriage - but could not find anything further. I think it is very likely that film 521839, which as Peter said is Madras Baptisms, Marriages and Burials Volume 11 and 12 of 1743 to 1830, contains exactly the same record which Thelma has already found at the British Library. Although some LDS microfilms are films of Church registers in India, 521839 is a copy of British Library records. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

One sentence appeared in the Sept 19th 1855 issue of Allens Indian Mail: "MURDER - A European, named Reeves, formerly an inspection of police, and at present employed as a railway engineer, beat his wife to death on Wednesday night (July 18th) at Howrah". (with thanks to the sharp eyes of Mark Steevens for spotting this). I have now confirmed that these are indeed my relatives - Edmund Daniel Adolphus Reeve(s), and his wife, Georgianna Caroline, (nee Barnes). Although a murder (and subsequent inquest), especially one involving Europeans, would normally be reported fully in the local press, I cannot find any further mention of this case at all. I believe there must have been some special circumstances, although the report above seems completely unambiguous, as although the penalty for murder was a death sentence, Edmund died from dysentery in jail three years later in 1858. (A previous case in the spring of 1855, involving the murder of a Mrs Thom by her husband, was reported extensively, and although found guilty of murder, Thom's death sentence was commuted to transportation). Does anyone have access to any information about this case, or can someone point me in the right direction to find the court proceedings, inquest details or similar? I'm really stuck as to how to find out more. With many thanks Lynden
It was a great favourite in our household in the days when entertainment consisted of friends gathering in one another's houses for a meal and afterwards gathering around the piano for a 'sing song' - brings back wonderful memories of my school years in the 50s when Mum and Dad would pack us in the car for a drive out to their friend's farm for the afternoon and evening - we'd have an early meal around 6pm and then all gather around the piano for a good ol' singing session. The menfolk loved getting their vocal cords exercise copying the latest hits of such early singing stars as Nelson Eddy, Richard Tauber and the likes. What treasure troves of memories that all brings back!! Cheers Ainslie.
