One of my ancestor Joseph Barretto of Calcutta and Bombay who lived in London had a son by the name of Joseph Augustus Barretto with Emily Potts. Joseph Augustus was born in London in 1821. He married twice: 1. Anna Gates who was born abt 1838. They were married in December of 1881 in Kensington, Greater London, London, Middlesex registered vol 5b page 268. 2. Unknown (any of the names: Edwards,Louisa/Evans,Margaret/Gordon,Anne/ or Owens,Catherine) married Sep of 1848 in Carnarvon, Anglesey, Caernarvonshire vol XXVII page 401. No info on the children of both marriages. Both records were found at ancestry.com. Since it is very impossible for me to personally check on these as I live in Manila, Philippines, would some kind hearted lister help me look-up or get a photocopy of these 2 marriage documents in case they are researching on the same records. Hi listers I have George GARLICK (b 1838) who was a Corporal in 36th Regiment of Foot also known as the Herefordshire Regiment. His Regiment left for India in 1863. George had a daughter, Mary Zipporah GARLICK, born 1864 in Lucknow and a possible son, George who shows up in the 1881 Cheshire Census as born in India. George was medically discharged from the Regiment in April 1874. His discharge papers have no medical report. It appears that he died by December 1874. Any information about him would be good. Don't know who his wife was and can find no record of a marriage for him. He would have been 25 in 1863 when he left for India. Information about the movements of the Regiment prior to 1863 are a bit sketchy, but I think they were in Ireland immediately before deployment. Grateful for anything. Thanks Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia

Hello List Margaret said: I found a burial record for my (possible) ggggrandmother, Mary Anne RODRIGUES, on an LDS film for Bengal, 1880. The heading is "Appendix 5D (Quarterly Returns) Burials within the jurisdiction of the Senior Marriage Registrar, Calcutta, during the Quarter ending 31st March 1880". What burials would be in the jurisdiction of the Senior Marriage Registrar? Why would they be in the jurisdiction of an official concerned with marriages? I hope someone has some answers, or at least opinions. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Birth and death registration which deals with the civil registration of births and deaths. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Birth_and_death_registration There is mention in this Fibiwiki page of details of birth registrations appearing on forms with the heading 'Office of the Marriage Registrar, Calcutta'. So it appears in Calcutta the Office of the Marriage Registrar was also responsible for the registration of births and deaths Registrar marriages, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Registrar_marriages commenced in 1852, so probably the administrative structure then in place was used when registration of births and deaths was introduced in Calcutta in 1864. I want to publically express my thanks to those on the India List who have provided possible directions for my search for William Henry Button's military history Thank-you Maureen, Ron, and Joss for the suggestions and links to potential information. A special thanks to Noel who actually located a possible WH Button reference in the Boer War and the link to it. Most of these sources were unknown to me. I will certainly be following up on these suggestions. Noel had asked whether my info came from an obituary. Yes the WW1 info came from his obituary. The Boer War and the boxing championships and India service were family lore provided by my mother. Looking for the obituary clipping I cannot immediately locate it (Recent move) and I also find that I haven't scanned it nor at minimum transcribed the information contained. A lesson to be learned. Strangely I did not see my posting in the list again. Is this a feature of this list, that the posting does not appear to the sender? Thanks Again. Support from this helpful list is much appreciated. Mel, Hmm, I've spent some time trying to get a lead on this fellow, with no real progress. Tried the London Gazette, The Times, etc., but no luck so far. OCR is picking up names such as 'Sutton' and 'Dutton' as well as 'Button', and that's not helping. The only snippet that I have found is that the Register of the Second Anglo-Boer War http://www.casus-belli.co.uk/index.asp does show a Private W H Button serving with the Leicestershire Regiment, as Pte. 8072. According to www.ancestry.co.uk there are 22 medal cards for 'William Button', and 5 for 'William H Button.' Two of the 'William H Button's died in the war (Dorsetshire Regiment and Household Battalion). 8 of the 'William Button's also died. You can check which ones from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web-site. I suggest that after you have done that and compiled a list of the remaining men you could then go through the Service Records and Pension Records on ancestry, where there are also a number of William Buttons, and quite probably eliminate some more possibles. This will, I think, leave you with quite a short 'final list' of candidates, and we may be able to solve the puzzle from there. I take it that the details you have posted come from an obituary of some sort? It might be helpful to post the details of that. Noel
Hmm, tricky! My grandfather and his brothers fought in Salonika too (on the non-Indian side of the family). You might be able to narrow down what regiment he was with by checking this site, which lists the regiments who were there - http://www.salonikacampaignsociety.org.uk/ It's still a lot, but a lot less than the ones who stayed in France! Then maybe check out which regiments were in India for the appropriate time scale - surely there weren't that many who were in both places? Joss Mel wrote - William Henry Button (b 1883, Nottingham) initially joined the army to fight in the Boer War but was bought out by his parents. He later joined the army (maybe at outbreak of WW1 as he was still at the family household in 1911 census) and during WW1 he served with the forces in France, Salonica and the Dardenelles. He also served in India for seven years as Quartermaster Sargeant. And while in India he was flyweight boxing champion three years running.

Hello Everyone Thank you all for your help, I have been following up the various references you have sent. For your information the following is a list of equivalent sterling values in New South Wales, Australia in November 1800 1 Guinea = £1-2-0 1 Johanna (Portuguese) = £4-0-0 ½ Johanna = £2-0-0 Gold Mohur (Bombay or Bengal) = £1-17-6 Spanish $ = 5/- Ducat = 9/6 Pagoda (S. India) = 8/- Rupee (Bengal) = 2/6 Dutch guilder = 2/- English shilling = 1/8 1oz Copper coin = 2d ½oz Copper coin = 1d ¼ oz Copper coin = ½d The copper coins had twice the value they did in England at this time, with £1200 in face value arriving in the colony (and to stop hoarding £5 was the largest amount permitted for legal tender). This is taken from Foundations of the Australian Monetary System 1788-1851 by SJ Butlin (1953) I'm very pleased I was not a shop keeper at that time although I guess my arithmetic would have improved out of necessity. Many thanks Cheers Caroline
Good morning all Has anyone comes across the following name. George Cruse born in Romford, England in 1897. Left England for South Africa, and the at some time arrived in Calcutta in 1932. Trying to trace if he had any family while in India. I believe he was a road engineer. Regards Eric Stewart
There must be some guidelines for using this List somewhere. I've noted that quite a few recent enquiries give no source references or other supporting information. For example, if you are asking for help with A who you state to have married B in year C, then please give the source of that marriage information, and anything else that you know about A and B, where the marriage took place, etc. etc. Every little helps, and it is often the seemingly trivial that provides the vital clue. Help is likely to be much more forthcoming if other Listers are confident that you have done some basic groundwork already, as they do not want to waste time repeating what you have already done. I am hoping that the boxing title might lead to identifying his unit. I tried contacting the Army Boxing Association but got no response. Can anyone on the list provide any clues or suggestions where to look? If he was a Quartermaster Sergeant in India he may have been on the Unattached List. See the FIBIS Fibiwiki page of that name. http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Unattached_List However there aren't records listed for periods post World War 1, and I don't know whether any exist. If they did exist, they might indicate which British Army Regiment he came from. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Hello List Betty said: I am researching the GOULD family, the above man ( born 1835) was I think, a captain in the British Army serving the Gaikwar of Baroda between about 1855-69. I know of his marriage and death but woud be pleaed if anyone can direct me to be able to find anymore about his background, in particular where he ws born and his parentage. Until that is established I cannot take the family any further back in time. The FIBIS Fibiwiki page British Army http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=British_Army Has a link to a National Archives guide to tracing Officers in the British Army. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Hello List Clive said: I would be more then grateful for any information or for someone to point me in the right direction to obtain more information on my Great Grandfather , who was in the 48th Regt in 1877, and of my Grandfather Samuel who may have been a guard working on the Indian Railways. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page British Army http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=British_Army which may assist. In particular, the online soldiers' discharge papers (WO 97 Chelsea Pensioners records) may be relevant. The FIBIS Fibiwiki page "48th Regiment of Foot" gives general background http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=48th_Regiment_of_Foot For general guidelines refer the FIBIS Fibiwiki Beginners Guide http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Beginners%27_Guide Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Richard said: An ancestor was Born & Baptized in Quilan Madras Presidency in 1807 The mother of my ancestor was mentioned in the Baptism record (Brit Library) as Maria Tressenah (deceased). I have lately discovered that the name Tressenah could be Trezinha or Terzinha possibly of Portuguese or Indo/Portuguese origin. Where can I search for a possible marriage between this lady and my ancestor who was serving with the 2nd Bn. 6th Regt. Madras Native Infantry (HEIC Army) at the time ? If Richard has exhausted all avenues at the British Library, and has tried the online directories and periodicals for the period, (http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Directories_online, http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Newspapers_and_journals_online) and has access to London, he could try the following possibilities on the off chance there may be something. *The card indexes at the National Army Museum -FIBIS Fibiwiki "National Army Museum" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=National_Army_Museum *Society of Genealogists- FIBIS Fibiwiki http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Society_of_Genealogists Richard could also check out directories and periodicals at the British Library for the relevant period. Another slight possibility, providing there is access to London, is to check out the index volumes of Bengal Past and Present to see if in fact there are any relevant articles relating to the Madras Presidency. The index volumes are available at the British Library, and possibly the Society of Genealogists. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
