Hello, Has anyone come across a family member with the first name of Yorrick? I have discovered such a person who was born in India around 1797. From my research it appears to be a very uncommon name. I'd be interested to hear from listsers as to why a father with the "sensible" name of George, whose father was Alexander, whose brothers were Charles and William, whose uncles were Francis and James and George, would name his son "Yorrick." Yorrick's mother was an Indian lady and that's about all that is known about her--other than the pet names George gave to her. The two were not married and George's father Alexander was not happy about the attachment between the two.. Best, Frances
Hi If SKS has access to this book I'd appreciate if they could confirm any details for James WOODFORDE of Madras who died there in 1836. He was an assistant surgeon I believe. Many thanks Ros -----Original Message----- From: india-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:india-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Elaine Sharp Sent: Tuesday, 14 September 2010 6:24 AM To: india@rootsweb.com Subject: [INDIA] Book of Surgeons Does anyone have the Book of Surgeons listing Andrew Brown, of Hillhouse and Clerkhill, Surgeon in the East India Company's Service B? Hello List I have come across a few Google Books where I cannot read online the last hundred or so pages. However, if I use the "Plain text" function, which is a transcription, I can click my way to later pages. An example is The Bengal and Agra annual guide and gazetteer, for 1841, where the last page I can easily access is page 366 and if I keep clicking on the pages, up to 370. http://books.google.com/books?id=6iQoAAAAYAAJ <http://books.google.com/books?id=6iQoAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA366> &pg=RA1-PA366. However , the contents lists items up to page 466. If I click on the plain text function ,I can get more pages, but the transcription can be inaccurate. This does not seem to be a problem affecting everyone, rather it just applies to me, or perhaps my computer system which is Windows Vista, or......? Has anyone else had this problem?. Has anyone any suggestions as to what I can do? Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Thank you, Phyllis, for reminding me of some of the family names from Podanur. My mother would have been buried in the same cemetery in 1956- though there was no head- stone ever erected. Regards. Herbie
My ancestor's occupation was listed as FUNHOLDER/FUNDHOLDER in the census. Does anyone know what this means? Ty
Based on the FreeBMD site under the item: Searching FreeBMD for potential spouses <<<Prior to 1852, up to 4 marriages were entered on each page of the register. Hence the search could result in the names up to 8 or 4 people, and any 4 or 2 of these could be the spouse of the person you are interested in. There is no way, from the index, to tell which person is actually the spouse.>>> In the case of my ancestor Joseph Augustus Barretto, names found (listed/indexed) from Vol27 Page401 were Louisa Edwards, Margaret Evans, Catherine Owens, and Annie Gordon. Plus the 3 other gentlemen/spouses. Yet I am inclined to see any record to confirm Joseph A and Annie’s marriage.
> Has anyone else had this problem?. Has anyone any suggestions as to what I > can do? > Maureen I have problems like this on an intermittent basis. Sometimes individual books fluctuate between preview only and full view, depending on unknown factors but probably includes your country. Because of this I try to download the PDFs when I can. Of course you then lose the ability to search in them. With regard to this particular book it is actually 1263 pages long. It is in three parts and Vol. 3 is 466 pages long. I also hit a limit (p475) in what I could step through in the PDF, but found I could download the entire work without problem. I have a copy I downloaded about 18 months ago for comparison. The new version turns out to be a scan of the same original, as identified by an ex-libris stamp and personal annotations, but strangely the PDF is now 73Mb whereas it was previously 68. If you have particular items you need to look up I can extract the relevant pages and send them to you. Simon.
Dear Friends, So much has developed on the internet, particularly at the FHS Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. It's amazing and an exciting time. April was the last time I enjoyed doing family research. Some may recall I began viewing films relating to cemeteries in India. This information is from Film #2232081 British High Commission Cemetery, page 460 Item R/4/775 Cemetery at Podanur, South Indian Railway The years of endowment are between 1932 and 1944. Receipts of Endowment were received from named individuals for the number and name of monument, along with the amount of the endowment. The page lists the following names: NAME OF MONUMENT Oswald Robert D'MONTE C. TIMMINS W. GOODSIR Valarie Benny MACFARLANE Frederic Donald PHAROAH Samuel Wilfred ADAMSON Robert HEATHCOTE Joseph Edgar FREEMAN Mrs. M.A. HILROSE (? -name in center fold/blurred) Oswald Higgins PHAROAH Edward BROWNE Patrick Albert Charles ALEXANDER William Thomas LAMBOURNE Jean Ann RORKE Sarah TRINDER (? - name in center fold) and Alfred TRINDER Perhaps this list will be of help to some. The spellings may be incorrect, as in the case of my HEATHCOTE record. For those interested in this page, please contact me off line to receive a personal use copy only. Regards, Phyllis

According to "Thailand and Burma Handbook 1995", the First Anglo- Burmese War in 1824 resulted in Britain being ceded the Arakan and Tenasserim regions which were ruled from Calcutta, H/Q of the E.I.Co.. Manipur also became part of British India. The Second Anglo-Burmese War of 1852 saw the annexation of Lower Burma by the British. In 1886 they invaded invaded Upper Burma, took Mandalay and imposed colonial rule throughout Burma. brinds

Hi Everyone I am trying to find the parents of a John Gerrard who was born in 1754 (from his HEIO service records), probably in England. I have found his service records on LDS films 2030123 (East India Co merchant marine appointments) and 2030124 (East India Co merchant marine services), but unfortunately his career began before the period of 1780 to 1800 covered by 2030127 (East India Co Officers Baptism or Age Certificates). Thus I have not found his baptism or other proof of age data. Is there anywhere else I can look in the East India Co information to find this? John Gerrard's career started in 1772 when he was a seaman on the "Anglicana" (I don't think this was an HEIC ship) on which he did an 8 month trip up the Straights. He then did his first trip to India and China, as a midshipman on the HEIC ship "Queen" in 1774 to 1776, and went on to become commander of both the "Deptford" and the "Pitt". So 1773/4 would appear to be when he would have applied to the HEIC. The IGI gives a John Gerrard christened on 29 Dec 1754 in Whitegate, Cheshire with parents William and Mary and another, christened on 8 Sep 1754 in Weaverham, Cheshire with father William. My John Gerrard named his first two children William and Mary, which would seem to fit, except for the fact that both of those names were extremely popular at that time! Any help appreciated. All the best Peter

Gilbert I suggest you contact the following to get copies of the certificates you require - the cost is 9.25 uk pounds per certificate. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/*_General Register Office of UK_* For the first marriage you may try Ancestry again in the London Parish Records some of the Kensington parishes are there and that marriage may be one of them. Mary Anne Melbourne, Australia > December of 1881 in Kensington, Greater London, London, Middlesex registered vol 5b page 268. Unknown (any of the names: Edwards,Louisa/Evans,Margaret/Gordon,Anne/ or Owens,Catherine) married Sep of 1848 in Carnarvon, Anglesey, Caernarvonshire vol XXVII page 401.
The difference in the names Ann / Agnes are perhaps an error of transcribing. The different reference numbers for the 1881 marriage are probably because one is the GRO and the other the Kensington Registrar's reference number. In the Death registers the name Agnes is probably the correct one (although she seems to have used Anne too) as that is also used in the Probate records. Both Barrettos left a will naming a W.J. or H.J. Gates as the Executor, probably her son. He died 23rd July 1900 and she 12th July 1902, both at Peckham. There is a chance that these wills might mention any children of the 1848 marriage. From the death registration Agnes was 69 so 50 at the time of her 1881 marriage so children from that 1881 marriage are unlikely. She was already a widow with several Gates sons in 1871. Joseph Augustus had two sisters who in 1841 are living next door to a Potts family and are traceable forwards from there. There is much more that could be discovered, but I don't know how far you have already searched. Tomas Christie.
