    3. Hello List Barrie said: Could you tell me how you obtained the email about a book of surgeons? A family member was in Madras and was an assistant and apothecary. In those days a person sort of did all the jobs. I am looking for James Perry. Crawford's "Roll of the Indian Medical Service 1614-1930" does list Apothecaries in the Madras Presidency although not the other Presidencies. For information about Apothecaries, refer the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Apothecary http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Apothecary There is information about a LDS microfilm of Crawford's book. 3. Hello Does anyone have access to newspapers in India for March/April 1901?   My greatgrandparents both died without any trace of certificates etc   I do have a detailed Account from the Accountant General's office which begins on 9 April 1901 paying off all household debts and numerous expenses for their four children as they were underage at the time ....this account is very interesting as it shows what kind of lifestyle the family lived in..............   Being a partner in the Funeral Undertakers Peter Swaries & Co. in Calcutta and Howrah I find this very puzzling   Charles k/a George lived in Howrah   56 King's Road   Was there a rail disaster?, floods ? or what on that day?.......days up to 9 April 1901   Thank you   Avril Anderson

    1. [INDIA] Railway workers Allahabad
    2. Hi everyone. Thanks for the info that has been sent to me on FIELDSEND. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following. My g grandfather Lewis Fieldsend was a steward with the Railway (I believe in Allahabad). Is there any way of confirming this? I am also trying to find out where he was born in India, as well, if his father Benjamin was born in India or the UK. There are so many Benjamin Fieldsend's in the UK censuses that I would not know where to begin I know Lewis and Amelia married in 1890 in Bengal. Several children followed (born in Cawnpore and Allahabad). My grandfather Emmanuel was a hospital porter. My father Donald was born in Moradabad in 1936. They left India in approx 1944 and went to Malta. They came to England in 1953. Unfortunately my father has passed away so I am unable to confim details with him. My g grandmother Amelia (Donegan) Fieldsend died in 1938 (indexing batch no: B75060-8 Source film no: 533195) and I found from www.familysearch.org that she was widowed which means Lewis predeceased her. Is there anyway of finding out this info? I have exhausted all routes witth http://beta.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1&region=ASIA_MIDDLE_EAST Many thanks in advance. I appreciate any info. Michaela Broughton (Fieldsend) UK

It is part of the "ProQuest5000" database. There are obituaries and articles in the Times of India from 1 August and for several days after. I therefore conclude that he probably died on 31 July 1940. 1. [INDIA] Cornelius and Crow

    3. After recently reading the Will of Michael Crow, Uncovenanted Deputy Collector of Calcutta, died 1847, I think I might have finally found my Maternal gr.gr.grandmother, Caroline Davis's maiden name. Michael married Rose Marie/Maria, the eldest daughter of Henry Cornelius of the Marine Board in 1826. In his Will he mentioned his 3 sisters-in-law - Mrs Catherine D'Souza; Mrs Caroline Davis and Miss Lydia Cornelius. Whilst there were quite a number of Caroline Davis in Calcutta at the time, I feel pretty sure this one is mine. Maybe a coincidence, but in 1847, Michael Crow Jnr was Godfather to Caroline's 2nd daughter Emeline Constance Davis. In 1857, Caroline's sister-in-law Constance Rigordy(nee Davis) married a John Crow after the death of her 1st husband. Michael had a son called John (a few years younger than Constance). Also, I have a photo of my Mum & 2 of her older sisters taken in 1919 when she was 18, with a very elderly gentleman called Maxwell Cornelius. I've searched all the usual websites, but apart from the deaths of Henry (1826) & his wife Dorinda (1821), nothing. In 1861, from Michael's Mother's Will, his surviving chldren were John, Charlotte, Rose Virginia & Henry. Nothing on them either. If anyone has any of these names, including Rigordy, please get in touch. Many Thanks Olga ______________________________________________ This email has been scanned by Netintelligence http://www.netintelligence.com/email

    3. Hello List Elaine said: I found 2 entries from Bengal Military Orphan Society (this far) on the FIBIS site for: 1. Ellen Brown b. Sep 10, 1840 arrived in England April 24, 1841, fathers name: Bt Major H. Brown, the rest lists missing pages. 2. Ellen Brown b. Sep 10, 1840 arrived in England April 24, 1849, fathers name: Bt Major W. Brown, pension payable: Agents, date of discharge: May 26, 1853, Remarks: Dead (Name crossed through on original document. So far I have not found her brother William Calderwood Brown so am I to assume he did not go to England? I know Major Brown allowed for these children in his will dated 1844, he died 1845, stating " I hereby appoint the directors and managers of the Bengal Military Orphan Fund the trustees of my aforesaid children." As Major Brown died in 1845, his daughter would not be an orphan in 1841 and would not be in the care of the Bengal Military Orphan Society. Therefore, the 1841 entry applies to someone else, or the details are incorrect. The next thing to consider is, who was the mother of the children. The LDS beta site lists the following but there is no mother's name. Name William Calderwood Brown Gender Male Baptism/Christening Date 03 Nov 1834 Baptism/Christening Place DELHI, BENGAL, INDIA Birth Date 20 Aug 1828 Father's Name William Brown Mother's Name Indexing Project (Batch) Number C75003-7 System Origin India-EASy Source Film Number 498970 Reference Number v 38 p 295 Name Ellen Brown Gender Female Baptism/Christening Date 08 Jun 1845 Baptism/Christening Place Delhi, Bengal, India Birth Date 10 Sep 1840 Father's Name William Brown Mother's Name Indexing Project (Batch) Number C75005-1 System Origin India-EASy Source Film Number 498983 Reference Number v 67 p 154 If the wife in Scotland, mentioned by Elaine in another post, was the mother, she would be about 45 when Ellen was born, which is not impossible. The fact that the wife's name is not mentioned on both baptisms many years apart perhaps indicates that the mother was someone else, perhaps different mothers for the two children given the difference in ages. The fact that Ellen was sent to England by the Bengal Military Orphan Society indicates that her mother was European, as only children with both parents European were sent to England, the other children remained in India. Also the children needed to have family or friends to be sent to. It is not clear why Ellen would have remained in India until 1848/1849 when her father died in 1845. Could she have had a mother, not the Scottish wife, still in India who perhaps then died c 1848/1849? Or perhaps the Scottish wife was the mother, and remained a few years in India before returning. The son, depending who the mother was, may have been educated either in England/Scotland or in India. If the latter, he may have been in employment by the time the father died. Ellen's death should be in the English or Scottish records. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
