The following announcement appeared in the West Briton newspaper, Truro, Cornwall, UK on 17 October 1851. I have no further information, nor any interest in the family. I purely forward it to the List in the hope that it's of use to someone. Best wishes, Tom Thompson, St Agnes, Cornwall. ---0--- The West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser - 17 October 1851. {Friday} BIRTHS. At Truro, on Tuesday last, the wife of Captain Thomas Frederick HAINES, of the "Ina," East Indiaman, of a son.
Last week I asked several questions about George Garlick (b 1837, Hadfield, Derbyshire) who was with the 36th Regiment of Foot when they travelled to West Bengal in 1864. This is what I have found out so far: 36th Regiment of Foot was known as the Herefordshire Regiment in 1864. It later became part of the Worcestershire Regiment. According to Hart's Army List this Regiment was in Aldershot in 1859 and then moved to Ireland. Their depot in Ireland was in Athlone, Co Westmeath. In 1862 they were in Kilkenny and in 1863 they were in Dublin. They then left to travel to West Bengal. George Garlick married Catherine Smith in Co Kildare, Ireland on 5 August 1861. Their daughter, Mary Zipporah Garlick was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in 1864. Their son George was born in 1866 in Shajehanpore which is also in Uttar Pradesh but consistently shows up in Army records as West Bengal. Catherine Garlick must have died prior to 1874 because after his medical discharge in April 1874 which occurred at Pembroke Dock, George Jr is in boarding school in Stockport and Zipporah is boarding with her Aunt Ruth in Hadfield. George has gone home to his parents in Stockport and it seems he died in December 1874 age 37. Mary Zipporah Garlick married James Bamford in 1884 and her father is clearly stated as George Garlick. Zipporah was a family name, she had an Aunt Zipporah also. George Jr's fate is not known at this point. I suspect he may have joined the Army sometime after 1881. He does not appear in any census records I have been able to find. Working with the Brit-Gen list and the India mailing list, I was able to find all this out in less than a week. Thanks to everyone for their assistance. Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
Hello Listers, Eileen Cavel Curtis married Thomas Ernest Abbott on May 18, 1936. Eileen and Thomas divorced and then she married Cyril Arthur Wright on September 22, 1945. I am wondering if anyone has knowledge of children from the first marriage that would have stayed with Eileen. Any information would be gladly received. Shirley Barbur

Thank you all for your replies. I do have her father William Brown's will and Ellen is his illeg. daughter. I did see this death record at Stow-on-the-World and wondered if it could be her but was not sure where it was however, if it was close to where she lived in 1851 it may be a possibility and the information given on index was minimal. Guess I need a death record and if it is not her, then I could go on forever ordering death records. Something to ponder. Thank you. Elaine California USA
From FIBIS I have from the Bengal Military Orphan Society Child Surname: Brown Child Forename: Ellen DOB: 10 Sep 1840 Date of Admission: Arrived in England 24 April 1849 Fathers Name: Bt Major W Brown To who pension payable: Agents Date of Discharge: 26 May 1853 Remarks: Dead (Name crossed through on original document) My questions what is the significance of "Name crossed through on original document". What proof is there that she was "dead". And when and where did she die? In England or India? I found her in the 1851 census in Bristol, Clifton, Gloucestershire, England living with a Henry Marshall and family and she is listed as Ellen Brown, 11, "Scholar" b. India. The US Ancestry World index has her incorrectly listed as age 14 but if you look at the record, it is 11. How do I find out when/where she died? If she died in 1853, it is 2 years after this census and she would have been 13 years old. So far, I cannot find her on England death records I have available to me on Ancestry World. Thank you. Thank you to both Maureen & Pat for the information they sent me. I finally managed to download the necessary TIFF programme to search the Times of India site, but am not finding it easy! Now know Edmund was Town Major of Madras in 1764, when he acquired a plot of land there. Also now need to try to find out whether the marriage in 1795 was "my" Edmund Pascal or not. Need a week at the British Library. Hello List Jim said: Thank you to all who help my find the obituary of Temulji B. Nariman, from a previous posting. Pardon my lack on knowledge on this subject (since I live in the states) but are death certificates / death records public in India, especially from 1940? If they are of public record, How can I obtain a copy of a death certificate/death record? Name: Temulji B. Nariman Died: end of July 1940 Location: Bombay, India (Parsi Lying in Hospital) There was some registration of birth and deaths in India, refer the FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Birth and death registration" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Birth_and_death_registration However, for practical purposes, obtaining a copy of the records is virtually impossible and would require the use of a service in India, unless a person was able to visit India themselves. Although people have in the past obtained copies of birth registrations, usually their own, I have not heard of anyone obtaining a copy of a death registration and have no idea what information it contains, or whether you need to be a close relative etc. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

Author: louliecsb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2535.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Bean Below are a list of website to begin with. Best not to pay a subscription until you have exhausted all free access sites. Only become a paying member if you have the time to make the most of your subscription. Try just paying for units first so that you can establish whether the site in question has a lot to offer your research www.rootsweb.com - join the mailing list - Click on mailing list, keywood India, before signing up look through the India archive section type in surname. Then sign up to India-L (not the D for digest). This is FREE. What is good about this list is everyone helps out. Always a good idea to search the archive of this list in case the name you are looking for has been put to the list in the past. If you decide to take your search further then do join the rootsweb India mailing list, the rootsweb site has mailing lists worldwide for all countries. www.familysearch.org - LDS this is a FREE searching facility, always start by just putting in the surname only, then click on the required section (location) on the right hand side. Then you can refine your search if you wish. End of May 2010 LDS did a pilot scheme which is currently still in progress and have added many more records, especially where India (Asia) is concerned. The best way to access this site now is select from across the top - Search Record, Click on Record Search Pilot - At this stage do not put a first name - Put the surname - Location, type India (when the drop down shows, select the first one India) best to do this otherwise you get Indiana in America as well. - Events: if you are looking for a specific event then select one, again best to leave as all then you can narrow down later. Spend time on here working out how to select and the best way to print off records. The draw back is it is not in date order, so you do need to trawl if loads of entries. The British Library (UK). They have put their index cards online, this is not all the records only a small amount which were indexed. Therefore, you may not find any or you may be lucky and find many. www.bl.uk (save the main site first in bookmarks) - then click on Collections, click India Office Records - scroll down a little - click India Office Family History (now save this as well in your bookmarks/favourites) as you will use the latter of this site often. My personal experience of this has been that whatever is online - that when I have then also looked on the microfiche film at the library the info has been exactly what was online. www.fibis.org - You can search this FREE. A good site to also become a member of. Cathy Day's site became part of FIBIS some years back. www.genesreunited.co.uk - You need to sign up FREE - Put whatever surname and location, India (searching is FREE) - but to make contact with any possible connections you need to pay/subscribe. www.sumgenius.com - or you may need to www.sumgenius.com.au/index.htm I normally only go here from time to time to see if any new families have been added. Although the surnames are not all cross referenced. If someone has put their tree on as SMITH and has FOOTE names attached, you may not find FOOTE by looking in F. www.geneanet.org - This is a French site - used worldwide (can select your language). www.ancestry.com - most sites will lead you to this www.findmypast.com www.ancestry.co.uk or www.ancestry.com - an initial search is free but to view you have to pay, worth buying units and making the most of them at the time. Worth joining if you intend to make the most of your year's membership and if you have good concrete names and dates you are looking for. www.movinghere.com - Passengers List - Free to view the details so check this before going to a pay view site, although not all are listed. It is a very good site, as once you have entered the surname it then shows you which areas of the world those surnames headed for. www.cyndislist.com or try www.cyndislist.com/asia www.indiaman.com www.infobel.com & www.calcuttatelephones.com - These are useful to see if there are any surnames of interest listed in the India directories, not all areas work. Reference purposes only. www.archivecdbooks.org Old books available on CD not just genealogy. www.indiabooks.co.uk - worth a look at. Regrettably the NLA (National Library of Australia) declined to subscribe to the Times of India digitisation, because of concerns about the quality of the images. It is available to residents of New South Wales, as the State Library of NSW has subscribed. It has been requested of SL VIC, but they have also declined. Alumni and students of certain universities may find it available through their college. From my experience so far in using this dataset, regrettably I need to confirm the NLA's opinion, as I have found the quality of the images to be very inconsistent, the OCR also leaves something to be desired as many 'hits' are not found by searching. Nevertheless, as I couldn't access any films of T of I after 1890, the digitisation fills a useful whole in resources. In July I wrote to the NLA and asked them to consider the Times of India as an addition to their dataset. This is their reply "Unfortunately, the quality of the images contained in the dataset was considered too poor for us to consider a subscription. We have provided feedback to the vendor about this. If there is an improvement in the product in future or a similar product is offered, we may be willing to conduct another trial." Mary Anne Gourley
Dear All, I am searching for any information on Captain (later Major) Edmund Pascal or Pascall who served with the Madras Army from 1745 onwards.
