For examples see the following book - http://www.archive.org/details/earlyannalsofeng02wilsuoft [1] I am particularly taken by the following extract (page v), regarding the arrival of a new Governor in 1710: "The luggage of the family consisted of nine tons of clothes, one ton of books, another of linen, a barrel of pewter, a bundle of bedding, six cases or small tubs of provisions, four hampers of cider, ten chests of beer, about the same quantity of wine, an escritoire, a harpsichord in a case, and 4,000 pounds of bullion." Hello List Ruth said: I was wondering if anyone could help with where I would look for a record of marriage for Dorothy Muriel Bragger and Thomas Trowbridge Munro or a death record for Phoebe Letitia Munro. I've looked at an online version of Bengal marriages between 1874 and 1896 but haven't been able to find a record there. The marriage date is likely to be between 1884 and 1886. Similarly the death record of Phoebe Letitia, I'd expect to be around the same time. The family lived around the Calcutta area and were Catholic. The LDS beta site has the following record which is not the period Ruth was looking for, so may or may not be the same person. Name Phoebe Laetitia Munro Gender Female Burial Date 05 Oct 1906 Burial Place Sealdah, Bengal, India Death Date 04 Oct 1906 Age 43 Birth Date 1863 Marital Status Widowed Indexing Project (Batch) Number B75040-5 System Origin India-EASy Source Film Number 528783 For details about the LDS beta site. Refer the FIBIS Fibiwiki page IGI which is also mentioned in the "Beginners' Guide" http://www.wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=IGI http://www.wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Beginners%27_Guide Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Liddell's 'Simla Directory 1901' lists the Westend Hotel as occupied by the 'Band of His Excellency The Viceroy. 'Page 73 of 'Simla Past and Present' by Edward J. Buck published in 1904 mentions 'West End Hotel' as a 'Government house' occupied by members of the Viceroy's band. It also mentions 'Boswell Villa' and 'Boville' as similarly occupied. Going back to 1901, I find 'Boswell Villa" occupied by Mr. H. E. Buchner (Bandmaster to the Viceroy) and Mrs. Buchner, and 'Boville' by Sgt-Major Vaughan and Mrs. Vaughan. Unfortunately I cannot find any of the three residences on my 1921 and 1924 maps. Noel nhclark@ozemail.com.au

Hi folks, Could someone throw some light on the above hotel for me? I vaguely recall a posting some while back with photos of historical buildings in Simla and I think one of those was the Grand Hotel. If so could I please had the URL of the website? My grandfather gave his' residence at the time of marriage' (for his Certificate of Marriage which was held in Colaba, Bombay in 1906) as West End Hotel, Simla. I've just tried that title in Google without success. Cheers Ainslie.
Please can any of you knowledgeable army people help me. Did British officers of the Indian Army (formed by the amalgamation of the 3 presidency armies) have the same pension allowances as members of HM forces? I had the impression they were less well off than their British officer counterparts Can anyone enlighten me. Mary
Hello Ainslie, I have been searching through four books on Simla, and cannot find any reference to the West End Hotel, Simla. However, I do have one - ""Residents of Simla 1989" .."an alphabetical list of the Principal British Residents and their addresses" which lists many hotels but no reference to the one you are looking for. The Grand Hotel features in two of them, with some early photos of it. A paricuularly good print of it in the book "Simla, A Hill Station in British India" by Barr & Desmond. I could copy this to you if you are interested. Also, give my your grandfather's name, I will look it up in the "Residents of Simla" booklet. Thanks to Tom Thomson for digging out the death notice in the West Briton of 5 December 1851 for Major Thomas Hare Scott of the 38th Bat. Native Infantry. helping to explain a little of why it was that his son Thomas Augustus Scott was recommended to the Honourable East India Company by Sir John Spencer Login. On his application to join the HEIC Thomas Augustus was Examined and passed 8th April 1857. He was educated through private tuition and 'Mr. Fleming's Wimbledon'. The Certificate from the East India Military College, dated 7th April 1857, indicated that they 'find him to be qualified for admission into the East India Company's Service ...' A letter from Sir John on the India Office file states that 'I hereby certify that I have known Mr. Thomas Augustus Scott from his infancy - that for the last six years he has been more or less under my charge as a companion to His Highness the Maharajah Duleep Singh - and that I have a very High opinion of his uniform good conduct and integrity. Signed J. S. Login, Super. of H H the Maharajah Duleep Singh. London, December 16th 1856'. It would appear that Thomas Augustus's mother Harriet (surname unknown) may have died on or about 1846, thus Thomas was in the care of Sir John, then a surgeon in the East India Company Service. Does anyone have any information on this family or on Thomas Augustus's uncle William F[auvren?] Scott of Falmouth? Any help would be appreiciated. Bruce Gorie Edinburgh
