    3. This is a good site for many reasons and the owner is to be congratulated and thanked. But, while I can't speak for anyone else, it does not list my ancestors who were born in India and are on the 1871 UK census. 1. [INDIA] Notation against burial index record
    2. Noel Clark
    3. Thank you to everyone who has replied to me both on- and off-list wrt my enquires about Bengal Public Consultations and the notation against a Bengal burial index record. You will have seen the on-list replies to the first enquiry. Wrt to the burial record, the notation 'IS2/152' means 'Indian States, Volume 2, page 152.' According to the LDS Family History Library catalogue, in the series 'Ecclesiastical returns, Indian States, 1889-1950' there are three LDS films: 498603 is the Index to births and deaths 1923-1950; 527422 is Volume 1 of baptisms and deaths 1889-1950; 527423 is Volume 2 of baptisms and deaths 1889-1950. The entries from Volumes 1 and 2 have been extracted and form part of the databases to be found on the LDS 'beta' search site. Noel

    3. Dear Listers I have recently found this website that lists anyone born in India or Burma who appears on the UK census returns for 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871. A remarkable achievement to list them all. If the owner is on the India List, then I would very much like to offer my congratulations for extracting such useful information. http://spuddybike.org.uk/familyhistory/census/index.html best wishes Liz Researching Chater or Armenians in India and Hong Kong in 2010? 1. [INDIA] FW: Agra - St George's Church & records
    2. Maureen Evers
    3. Hello List Joss said: My great grandparents were married at St George's Church 15 Apr 1889 and I have the details from the British Library records N/1/208 which give the information one would expect: names, ages, marital status, his profession, both places of residence, fathers' names, banns, witnesses. Would the original records give anything additional to this, for example might they mention the bride's suspected Anglo Indian origins? The impression I get, and this is based more on earlier records than 1889, is that whether racial background was recorded depended on the views of the individual minister, and could vary over time in the same church Also you need to know just what is meant by the wording used and the meaning may be specific to that church, perhaps at that time. Recently I gave some links to records from St Mary's Madras, which are based on the actual church registers. There is a footnote in for the 1780 records saying "native" of India means a person who was born in India. "They might be of European blood or mixed parentage" http://www.archive.org/stream/genealogist00unkngoog#page/n287/mode/1up or http://tinyurl.com/25mdrt7 This March 2009 archived post mentions a researcher in Agra, if Joss' friend doesn't have time to look at records in Agra. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/india/2009-03/1237825961 The link within given for contact details seems to be for another site now, but I have a note that the contact telephone numbers were Home: 562 2480255; Cell: 9837057271 and 9837407970 Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

    3. Joss, the original marriage registers WILL have the signatures of your great grandparents. Additional information that MAY be found:- 1) place of baptism 2) date of baptism 3) whether the bride (or groom) was Christian - if so of what kind 4) name of mother 5) dates and places of other life events 6) consanguinity I would send your friend along with her camera, she may be allowed to photograph the register. Or better still go yourself. best wishes, Mark

Author: PeterHenderson67 Surnames: Warburton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2540/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can anyone tell me what the (Indian) Ordnance Commissariat Department (OCD) did in the period around 1854 to 1863. And what duties would a Conductor & Sub-conductor employed by the OCD have undertaken? My gggrandfather, John Warburton, was given the (warrant officer) rank of Sub-conductor in 1854. He went to work with the OCD and was made a Sub-conductor of Ordnance on 7 August 1857. His posting is shown as "Arsenal". He was appointed Conductor on 16th November 1859. And was pensioned (retired) in 1863 at the age of 44. He had previously been a Sergeant in the 2nd Company, 6th Batallion of the Bengal Artillery which as I understand it was a Regiment of the East India Company. He had served in the Sutlej Campaign during the First Sikh Wars (1845-46). Any information would be much appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I ask because a friend is having a holiday in India in December. She has already very kindly agreed to take some photographs and might be prevailed upon to check the records for me, but I don't like to ask if it is not absolutely necessary as her schedule is pretty tight and I'm sure she'd much rather be admiring the Taj Mahal than rummaging around church registers! 1. [INDIA] Re Country Ship
    2. Ainslie Sharpe
    3. I have found an entry for my husband's ancestor in the Bengal Artillery, in the muster rolls of the Bengal Army 1777-1783. In the column which shows the means by which they entered the service instead of the name of the ship, or "Dutch Service" etc it states "Country Ship". It shows that he was from Ireland, aged 43, enlisted in London in November 1769. Would it be likely that he has transferred from the HEIC's marine service of some kind - hence "Country Ship"? Regards Ainslie (Perth, WA)

    3. Don't forget that in some years Country Ships did work to London, as "Extra" ships. It's quite possible that new recruits fro the military could have been sent out from England on these ships when returning to India. Also note the Country Ships were crewed largely by Lascars. Simon.

The likelihood is that he joined either the Company's Army or its Mercantile Service in London and then transferred service out in the East, eventually transferring to the Bengal Artillery. My suspicion is that the clerk who made the original entry in the Bengal Musters may have been overly pedantic whereas, in fact, the country ship may simply have brought him from another Presidency. Assuming that the surname is not too common, my suggestion is that you look in the army recruits' Embarkation Lists both to find him shortly after November 1769 and also to see the destination of that vessel. If he joined the Mercantile Service, you might find him in the Crew Lists of East Indiamen of the same period. Hope this helps Good Hunting!
