Hello List Frances said: On another matter, could you please tell me how to access the work you cite, Eighteenth-Century Newspapers and Journals? I have access to ECCO but didn't see it there. I was wondering what the shelf mark of those records might be. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has the page "Subscription websites-online newspapers, journals and directories" <http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Subscription_websites-online_newspape rs,_journals_and_directories> http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Subscription_websites-online_newspaper s,_journals_and_directories or <http://tinyurl.com/263csrn> http://tinyurl.com/263csrn Frances should look on the website of her participating library which provides access to ECCO to see whether access to Eighteenth Century Journals is provided. If not she could perhaps request that her library becomes a subscriber In respect to Frances' second query, Cadets and Writers were two classes of employees who provided baptismal evidence with their application forms. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Census <http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Census> http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Census but it says there are very few census records available to help you trace your ancestors that lived in India Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

Hi folks, I was reading a message on the NZ genealogy list about census taking and wondered if a similar census was taken in India? ie of the British-born citizens living/working in India at any given time? and if so is the information online? I'm still trying to track down my grandmother's movements prior to her trip to India shortly before she married my grandfather in Colaba, Bombay in 1906. It appears that she arrived only a few days prior to their wedding and that he travelled from Simla to Bombay for the occasion as he gave as his residence at the time of the marriage as 'West End Hotel, Simla' and yes! There was such a hotel in Simla as some keen detective work produced recently! Regards, Ainslie.

Curious! No connection and just a coincidence? (My mother is a Una and would be a niece of this one if she is indeed Una Maude Laws) Maybe the same child and errors in recording or could she maybe have even been a twin sister? I still can find no more records for Una Maude than I can Ann Maude. I'm really hoping one of you can suggest some leads. Frances Have you checked for any newspaper reports of shipping 'intelligence' about the right time? Was the Anna on her way to India or from it, and do you have an exact date when George died? "The Bombay Courier" is available digitised for the right time period, as part of this set "Eighteenth Century Journals: Newspapers and Periodicals 1685 - 1815" by Adam Matthews. Looking at an issue for 27 December 1800, I see a brief note of Cape Intelligence copied from the Cape Town Gazette of August 16. This suggests that any mention of the Anna and Danish ship incident will be reported at least 4 months later. There were Danish factories at Tranquebar and at Frederiksnagore (Serampore), so the Danish ship could have been making its way to either of those places. Found on Pilot Family Search, Ann Maud(e) Laws was born in Calcutta on 11th September 1909 to William Willoughby Laws and Maud Louisa. She was christened on 28th September also in Calcutta. As it was only a fortnight after her birth, was she very poorly and maybe died as a baby? However I cannot find any further records for her, either in India or England. I have found her siblings, Duncan, Maurice, Rodney and half siblings, Hugh and Patricia. Maurice is still proving a little tricky but Ann is a real headache. Hi list, for those with ancestors in England, the Yesterdays site has been updated with hundreds more records of persons from throughout the British Isles. There is also a small Miscellany section for records with an Indian connection. Link below, if it fails Google Yesterdays Journey. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm
Hello Listers, I have been carefully making sure that I have references for the information in my tree. I have my 4th x Great Grandfather, James RICHARDSON arriving in India in 1808 on the William Pitt, and that he was a Gunner in the Right Wing Carnatic European Veteran, Battalion. Also his marriage to Susannah PARISH on the 21 Feb 1820 with the reference N/2/7/312. For the life of me I cannot find where I obtained this reference, it doesn't appear to be the usual haunts such as the National Archives, FIBIS or the India Office Family History Search, the reference on the beta search site is an LDS film no. and doesn't give any other info. I know James died sometime before 1829 as his wife was a widow then and that he was apparently born around 1790ish. in Barnett Middlesex, I am presuming I have this information as well as his arrival date from the same source, but it could be two different sources I am missing. Does anyone have any clue which website I would have trawled to find James' military info and the British Library reference? Thank you, Sylvia, for the promising lead. I am not writing from home at the moment so cannot give you the exact date of George's death, but it was in the last week of December 1800. The captain of the ship on which he died was Patrick Clark; he died off the Cape of Good Hope. The ship was on its way back to England. I am not sure whether he wanted to disembark at the Cape or in England. In his last extant letter, he talks of looking for a promotion either in Bombay or at the Cape. On another matter, could you please tell me how to access the work you cite, Eighteenth-Century Newspapers and Journals? I have access to ECCO but didn't see it there. I would be thrilled if the Cape Intelligencer or some other periodical carried news of the transfer of effects. His death was announced in the Gentleman's Magazine and such like periodicals. Recently, (I think) a lister mentioned that he had found a baptismal record for an 18th century ancestor in the IOR archives. I was wondering what the shelf mark of those records might be. Thanks.
