    1. [INDIA] Family Records Centre - copy of microfilm requestsfor Ecclesiastical Records of India
    2. Penny Helliwell
    3. Hi List, Again, Thanks Cheryl for your help with the above. People from the list have been very helpful. I wonder if I could ask at all if anyone is going to the British Library could do a search for me for the marriage in India for my John Cameron. Details are John CAMERON marrying Martha WOODS in Ferozepore, India on 26th Feb 1863, that would be a great help and I would be deeply grateful. I went back to my local LDS centre and they said it would be better now to leave asking for a copy film until the New Year as the film will take a few weeks to come by which time the centre will be closed over Christmas and New Year. Kind regards Penny

    1. [INDIA] Is there a list of casualties of the Mutiny?
    2. Daniel Morgan
    3. Is there a list somewhere of those who died in the Indian Mutiny? Does it include an Esther FRASER, wife of John FRASER, a private in the 12th Lancers? The reason I ask is as follows: John FRASER married Esther STANBRIDGE in Canterbury registration district in the 3rd quarter of 1856. In August 1856, the 12th Lancers set off for foreign service, stationed at Secunderabad. A daughter, Esther Elizabeth, was born at sea on 18 Sep 1856 and baptized in Bangalore on 3 Feb 1857. A second daughter, Jane, was born in Secunderabad in 1857 or 1858 (aged 3 in the 1861 census). Presumably Esther died in 1857-1860, although I have not found a record of this. In the 4th quarter of 1860, John was back in England marrying Esther's sister Lemery (in Leeds registration district). In the 1861 census, John, Lemery, and the two girls were living with the 12th Lancers in barracks in Leeds. Esther could, of course, have died from natural causes, but the date is suggestive. Daniel

    3. Hello List Bev said: Following on from earlier email questions about my ancestor in the Honorable Company Marine, cited as a Master in Bengal Pilot Service in 1819 register and also as an H C marine on both his marriage and death certificates. Does anyone have an opinion or knowledge on this career and whether this profession was recruited from the native population (i.e.those already living in India) or recruited in UK and sent to India? I'm just trying to work out whether my ancestor might have been first generation in India or whether there were earlier generations. There is evidence of boys being apprenticed to Bengal Pilots. There is mention of boys from the Military Orphan Schools (the Upper Orphan School and the Lower Orphan School) and also the Free School being apprenticed to Bengal Pilots, from the late 1700s/early 1800s. Whether they went on to become Bengal Pilots themselves, I have no idea. There is a FIBIS Fibiwiki page called "Bengal Pilot Service" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Bengal_Pilot_Service This gives details of the holdings at the National Maritime Museum which include index cards in the Percy-Smith Collection (MS 88/006) relating to Bengal Orphans (1780-1840) One would expect these to be Orphans who were apprenticed to the Bengal Service (although it doesn't actually say this). There are also index cards in respect of Bengal Marine and Bengal Pilots (1700-1914). The Fibiwiki page "Bengal Pilot Service" also has a link to a short story by Rudyard Kipling called "An Unqualified Pilot". This is a story about a father who was a Bengal Pilot, 'who had waited on the [Hooghly] river from his boyhood', who wanted his fourteen year old son to join the Subordinate Civil Service, so the son at least was born in India, possibly also the father. The son ends up being apprenticed to another Bengal Pilot. This is an interesting read (and quite short). It was first published 1895 and set in a time 'a good many years ago' There is another FIBIS Fibiwiki page called "Maritime Service" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Maritime_Service which has links to other websites with information about records. 3. Hello List I am researching William Alfred Bowen who was in the EIC and received a pension of £9 12s for life in 1818 and his widow Catherine (Kitty) was give a widowhood pension of £12 for life when William died in 1831. In the UK 1841 Census I have found that Catherine/Kitty was in Poplar Hospital, as a pensioner, and that in the 1851 Census she was in the East India Company Buildings, Poplar as a Pensioner East Indies Company. Can anyone tell me what the East India Company Buildings were? It obviously seems that they were for widows/widowers of the EIC but I might be wrong on that. Also, any idea when they were built and exactly where? I am also looking for information his 10 children by Catherine/Kitty: William bc 1804, St. Dunstans, StepneyJohn William b. 1806, St. DunstansMary Elizabeth b. 1808 St DunstansCatherine b. 1812 PoplarDavid Alfred b. 1815 PoplarWilliam Robert b. 1817 Poplar whom, I think, married a Mary Templeton in 1852 in Stratford Bow, and was also a MarinerThomas James b. 1820 PoplarMary Rebecca b. 1823 Poplar whom, I think, married a John Edward Biggs in 1845 in Aldgate. Biggs was also a MarinerAbel b. 1825 Poplar, Commander of the River Boat Chumbol on the Hoogly in Calcutta, died in 1868 Calcutta/Chandenagore and was my great grandfatherFrederick William b. 1828 Poplar I am pretty sure that William Alfred's parents were a William and Mary and that they had another son Thomas b. 1775 St. Dunstans, Stepney, as was William Alfred in 1772. If anyone can help me on any of these facts I would be extremely grateful. RegardsSimon Bowen

One more thing could anyone tell me please, does the British Library have actual copies on microfilm of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials please? Many Thanks again, Penny

    3. Hi Les Thanks for your reply. I wonder if your Lovedale records have details of my grandfather, Joseph Richard Montgomery's school progress (academic &/or sport)-he was admitted to the school on 24/05/1889 with dob of 22/12/1882.Would like to know, please. This is a shot in the dark-Douglas Neale born about 1950 so admitted about 1957-any details about him, only if it's not too time consuming, please. TIA Regards. Herbie

I have been through the entry papers of about 600 Bombay Marine and Bengal Pilots and almost without exception they were sent out from London. There were perhaps less than 10 already in India, transferring across from other services. This was noted in the record, as normally they would have specified the ship the new recruit travelled out on. HTH Simon.

    1. [INDIA] Looking at films of original records...
    2. Noel Clark
    3. I absolutely agree with Maureen on this one. For the key people in your family tree it is very advisable to look at a film or other facsimile copy of the original record. Transcriptions quite often omit information on the original - such as occupations, ages, actual dates of birth and death, notes in the margin, etc. - and may in fact be completely wrong. Looking at the original also allows you to look at the rest of the page and all the entries for that particular year, and that can sometimes throw up completely unexpected and important information on people other than your ancestor, such as work colleagues etc. Best wishes, Noel

    3. Hi Olga, I know some years ago you responded to my emails to the list as I seem to remember you have the ELLISON name in yr tree too? If so, maybe there is a connection somewhere, as my ancestor on recent posts was also a member or the Marine Board and an HC Marine who also married 1806. Good luck with further research on the names you mention. You might ask the helpful staff behind the Information Desk to show you a copy of "Baxter's Guide" and point you in the right direction. Baxter's Guide has several pages describing the records of employees in various capacities. If you decide to go there on Saturday, you might like to call in the morning to the FIBIS 'Surgery' where an expert will be pleased to explain how to find what you want. This is to be held at the Hughes-Parry Hall in Cartwright Gardens, 5 minutes walk from BL. (Details on our web-site - www.fibis.org ) Good Hunting! 3. Hi List, I wonder if anyone has experience of looking at the L/MAR records at the British Library? I'm wondering whether these records/documents make any mention of individuals/employees. I'm looking for information on my 4G Grandfather who was a Master in the HC Marine/ Bengal Pilot service but I'm unsure these records will include this information?? I am wondering whether to make a visit tomorrow, so advice before then would be great :o) I also understand the Caird Library at the National Maritime Museum holds index cards for Marine's during this period and may/may not have information. Again other listers advice/experience and comments are welcome before I head there (which won't be tomorrow, as the Museum is closed on Fridays & Mondays...typical as I have holiday booked for Fridays and Mondays!!) Thanks Bev

    3. Hello List Penny said: I have been trying to search for John CAMERON b. 1841 Scotland d. 1927 Maymyo, Maynmar and his family in India. I have had loads of luck with Ecclesiastical records on the family search site https://beta.familysearch.org so armed with my film numbers I went along to the Family Records Centre to request copies of the films, all 25 of them. However they now cost £7.50 per film and as the very helpful person in the centre told me the records won’t tell me anything more than the transcribed records on the web site. So I have decided that I won’t go down that road I will make do with the copies of records off the site. Some fo the records are confirmed on the FIBIS site so I think I will be happy with that information. However I still have a query...The details are John Cameron was supposed to be a Doctor in the Welsh Fusiliers. I don't think it is correct for the Family History Centre to say the original records will have no additional information. For instance in a baptism, the records will usually give information about the father's occupation, and if he is in the Army, will usually give the rank and regiment. This information is very rarely given on the beta or pilot Family Search records, other websites may have more information if they have the same record. However, it sounds as if Penny does not have this information. So if Penny has any baptismal records where John Cameron is the father, or a recent marriage record of John Cameron, I would at least look at the microfilm at the latest date available to see what it says about his Army rank and Regiment. If he was an Apothecary, which from 1894 were called Assistant Surgeons, it would be expected that this information would be shown. However,, the majority of Apothecaries/Assistant Surgeons were born in India. The earlier he arrived in India, the lower the probability he would be an Apothecary, as in the earlier days virtually all Apothecaries were born in India. For more information about Apothecaries, see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Apothecary http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Apothecary The FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Family History Centres" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Family_History_Centres gives information about a photocopy service which may be cheaper than ordering microfilms in some circumstances. However, you do need to have the British Library IOR Volume and page Number reference, and only some ( a few? ) of the records from the beta or pilot Family Search site actually quote this reference. Perhaps the Family History Centre which Penny attended may have the index volumes on site and could give the appropriate reference. You can search to see the microfilms on site at the London LDS Centre. (Link in the Fibiwiki page) Cheers Maureen
