Hello, A lot of children were sent back to England at this period by their parents. These children were often taken by another older Lady returning to England. Officer and officials wives could rarely go home until their husbands had completed 25 years service, and most children were born perhaps 5 to 7 years into this service, and would go home in the 14 to 18th year of service. If you look into the shipping records of the period this is quite common. Mrs Helen Baber took children from other families in 1815. I don't have a transcript, but in Warren Hasting's letters I found a fascinating letter from another official written in London following a voyage home. He describes how the ships travelling in convoy would occasional come close enough together and would be travelling so slowly in the Doldrums that all the women would be rowed to the largest vessel for a dance, and then return to their ships. Of course much time was spent getting very cold and wet, but these voyages often had more pleasant moments. I wish that letters had survived from children, because several of my ancestors travelled home from India as 5 to 7 year olds to go to school in England, a land they had never been to before. Hello Listers, Has anyone on the list ever come across an account, diary, memoir, even a historical novel, that describes what people did during those long voyages? I am particularly interested in the period 1790-1810, and to be very precise, would like to know what children did on their way to England to pass the time. But any tip will be useful. Thanks again, Frances

Virginia Rencontre (Chr Mary Virginia Rencontre) was born in 1842 and was one of 8 children born to Francis Rencontre and Mary Eleanor Lewis. Virginia Rencontre married Alexander Brockman in 1860. The G G grandmother you are probably referring to is actually Adelaide Rodriguez Francis Rencontre's 1st wife who had 3 children. Hello List Diana said: Some of my military relatives are proving to be a bit confusing. In 1808 Stephen PARISH was a Matross (?) in Captain Taylor's Company 2nd Battalion in Trichinopoly according to his son's baptism - N/ 2/3/264. Stephen arrived in 1800 aged 23 according to the 1808 muster roll. James RICHARDSON No. 1930 (Stephen's son in law) was a Gunner in the Right Wing Carnatic European Veterans Battalion (Muster Roll 1824) he arrived in 1808 aged 34. A Matross was a private in the Artillery, an early term that was replaced by the word Gunner. Assuming that the muster rolls are for the East India Company Madras Army, then this company would be part of the Madras Artillery. There is a FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Madras Artillery" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Madras_Artillery with a link to the Madras European Foot Artillery where I suspect Captain Taylor's Regiment belongs. The FIBIS Database called "A List Of The Officers Who Have Served In The Madras Artillery" gives the following record for a Captain Robert Taylor who seems to be a Captain at the right period: First Names Robert Surname Taylor Corps Artillery Presidency Madras Captain May 11, 1806 Regarding the Carnatic European Veteran Battalion refer this archived India List thread http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/india/2007-04/1177314048 which refers to a link in Cathy Day's site. This site is now archived and the link is http://web.archive.org/web/20040407165055/members.ozemail.com.au/~clday/bull .htm or http://tinyurl.com/3y467ss The relevant wording is: William BULL joined the Carnatic European Veteran Battalion, a unit of the Madras Army - i.e. part of the East India Company, not the British Army. This battalion had been formed in 1811 out of European invalids. That is, European men who had been soldiers in the British Army in India but were now too old or infirm to perform the duties of an active soldier. The battalion was mainly involved in garrison work, that is, guarding the garrison of East India Company units to free up the young and fit men for active duty. William BULL joined the Carnatic European Veteran Battalion on 26th February, 1819 and received a splendid new red uniform with grey facings and silver lace. He left the service for a pension on 31st December of the following year and died in Madras less than six months later. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
I cannot find anyone matching this description in the Soldiers' Discharge Papers on FMP. Looking at the 1861 and 1871 censuses I see that John was actually born in Bermuda. In 1871 John had left the army and was living in Islington. The eldest child with him was Elena? Aged 9, who was born in Aldershot, and the next child was aged 6 and born in Islington. This suggests to me that John left the army some time between 1862 and 1865. It's important to realise that if the soldier was not discharged to pension (that is if he died, or otherwise did not serve long enough to qualify for a pension - 12 years unless wounded) then his service papers will not be found in the WO series on FMP. My guess is that John FRASER did not serve the full 12 years. Noel
Dear Listers Some of my military relatives are proving to be a bit confusing. In 1808 Stephen PARISH was a Matross (?) in Captain Taylor's Company 2nd Battalion in Trichinopoly according to his son's baptism - N/ 2/3/264. Stephen arrived in 1800 aged 23 according to the 1808 muster roll. Stephen married Susannah MASON in 1802. Their child Susannah PARISH was born in 1809 in Vizagapatam. I can't seem to find any information on the Company that he was in and I would like to trace his career and perhaps even find his death record. James RICHARDSON No. 1930 (Stephen's son in law) was a Gunner in the Right Wing Carnatic European Veterans Battalion (Muster Roll 1824) he arrived in 1808 aged 34. He married Susannah PARISH in 1820 Vizagapatam and it seems she was only 11 years old at the time. Apparently James died sometime around 1828 as his wife Susannah remarried in 1829 in Vizagapatam, their child Maria RICHARDSON was born in 1824 in Vizagapatam. I have googled the Carnatic European Veterans Battalion but can't seem to find much information on them at all. I have found no death record for James. Thomas GASKELL (GASKILL/GASCALL) No. 2/28 or 2000 arrived in 1823 aged 38 as a Gunner for the 2nd Battalion (?) Must Roll 1842 and Madras Register of European Soldiers L/MIL/11/101, apparently Thomas was invalided in 1839 (same reference) and in 1840 was a Private in CEOB (?) in 1842 Thomas married Maria RICHARDSON in Madras at that time he was a Gunner in European Veterans Comp. Artillery. I was wondering whether Thomas was transferred to the EVCA due to his being invalided (?) and whether this was the same company as the Carnatic battalion that his father in law was in. Thomas died in 1859 according to the Casualty Rolls L/MIL/11/232. I would be grateful for any information or advice relating to researching further these battalions and their movements. Hello List Daniel said: Is there a list somewhere of those who died in the Indian Mutiny? Does it include an Esther FRASER, wife of John FRASER, a private in the 12th Lancers? The reason I ask is as follows: John FRASER married Esther STANBRIDGE in Canterbury registration district in the 3rd quarter of 1856. In August 1856, the 12th Lancers set off for foreign service, stationed at Secunderabad. A daughter, Esther Elizabeth, was born at sea on 18 Sep 1856 and baptized in Bangalore on 3 Feb 1857. A second daughter, Jane, was born in Secunderabad in 1857 or 1858 (aged 3 in the 1861 census). Presumably Esther died in 1857-1860, although I have not found a record of this. In the 4th quarter of 1860, John was back in England marrying Esther's sister Lemery (in Leeds registration district). In the 1861 census, John, Lemery, and the two girls were living with the 12th Lancers in barracks in Leeds. The FIBIS database has transcriptions from the London Gazette. The description of the records says "Throughout the later stages of the Indian Mutiny, the Military Authorities were required to issue returns, generally Area by Area, of all Europeans who were killed or wounded by disaffected soldiers or local residents, from the beginning of the uprising. These returns were published in a number of Supplements to the London Gazette, generally throughout the year 1858.This list is a transcription of many of these records". http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_browse_sources.php?mode=browse_compo nents&id=493&s_id=103 or http://tinyurl.com/33m2o8f However I didn't find an Esther Fraser. If John Fraser was discharged from the Army, i.e. he didn't die in the Army, his records may be in the WO 97 records on Findmypast. (charge applies for record, free search) These records often include information about marriages , births and deaths. For more details see FIBIS Fibiwiki "British Army" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=British_Army. Section 4.1.2 "Service and pension records" details WO 97 records. The FIBIS Fibiwiki "Chaplains Returns" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Chaplains_Returns has information about BMD in the British Army. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
