    3. Hello List Mark said: This is a repeat of an inquiry last July. Information please on Alice Edith Campbell. She was married in Bombay 2 August 1879 to Surgeon Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan of the Army Medical Service. It's not stated where Mark obtained his information about Surgeon O Sullivan, but as it appears he was in the British Army Royal Army Medical Corps (as opposed to the Indian Medical Service), has Mark investigated his service record which should be at the National Archives Kew if he satisfied the conditions for a discharge (mainly that he didn't die in service)? A discharge record may have details of marriages, deaths etc. I was looking at a soldier's discharge record recently (on Find my Past, WO 97 records) and it had full details of marriage, baptism of children and some details of the death of one of the children, so the officer's records may have the same information. However the officers' records are not on Find My Past The FIBIS Fibiwiki page "Doctor" http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Doctor has a short section on the Royal Army Medical Corps. Cheers Maureen (Sydney)

    3. This is a repeat of an inquiry last July. Information please on Alice Edith Campbell. She was married in Bombay 2 August 1879 to Surgeon Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan of the Army Medical Service. Surg. O'Sullivan was shortly thereafter stationed at Peshawar, Murree and Rawalpindi. He was posted back to Aldershot between 27 December 1883 and 9 March 1886, after which he returned to India; between January and July 1887 he was temporarily sent to take charge of the British General Hospital Burmah in Rangoon; between 22 August 1887 and 21 February 1888 he was transferred back to the UK sick, and then returned once more to India. Alice Edith must have died by 1889, when he remarried in Lahore. She may have been known as Edith, and born in Cornwall, as there is family tradition of this. I cannot find her christening or funeral in the ecclesiastical records in the BL APAC (India Office) collection, nor anyone of that name for appropriate years in the England & Wales records either of births in Cornwall, or of deaths. Campbell itself may have been a married name. A married Edith Campbell appears in the 1871 census, aged 22 and born in St Agnes Cornwall, and living in Godalming - suggestively close to the Aldershot army base. There is also an Edith Perry, aged 12, born in "Cornwall", in the 1861 census at Woodville House, Ilfracombe, with her family (headed by an aunt, Mary Ann Dymock, a clergyman's widow); and an Edith Adelaide Perry aged 3, daughter of a clergyman in St Agnes, Cornwall, in the 1851 census. Has anyone come across an Edith O'Sullivan between August 1879 and December 1888, or an Edith Campbell between 1864 and 1879, or an Edith Perry between 1848 and 1879? Mark O'Sullivan Somerset

    3. Following the interesting voyages to and from India theme..................... In the Raj tradition of children been sent to school in England , provided their parents could afford it. My Uncle Harry, sailed to England circa 1911 and walked 8 miles a day from his Grandfather's home to Dulwhich College in Surrey. My father's last known school attendance in India, was at Cathedral Boys High School (Boys), Bombay in 1915. Has he too was sent to Prices boarding School, in England,he presumably sailed in a convoy, across the war torn seas of 1916 to England. However, I have been unable to find either my father, or uncles name on any shipping intelligence for those years? Perhaps some one could suggest a reason, or a reliable source of passenger lists for that period?? Cheers J & C Wellborne

    3. Dear Tom, Thank you so much for your continued postings from West Briton newspaper. With your G.L.JAMES posting I learned two things: where the JAMES clan hail from (which is very ironic given my mother's mother's clan hail from Helston too) and that G.L's father is also Indian Army - yippee! Kind regards Robin

    3. You might also be interested in a novel, The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason published in 2003 by Picador, ISBN 0-330-49269-1. Although, as I say, a novel, I imagine it is based on some basic facts and covers the exploits of a piano tuner sent from London to Burma in 1886 on a special mission, but which seems a bit far-fetched at times! His journey through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal to Bombay, and then by train to Calcutta is described. It is sometime since I read it, so I'm not up to speed on the full story, but hopefully it may be of interest. Best wishes, Tom Thompson, St Agnes.

Author: lambuisman Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.asia.india.general/2557.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tthank you. I don't know anything about Mary Jane's father except what's on her marriage cert. in 1886. His name William John Bennett, occupation painter. The odd thing is, that the occupation of the groom's father, William Foulkes, was "Soldier". Not impossible, but I have seen so many strange things on certificates by now, it wouldn't surprise me if something had gotten mixed up. The 1881 Census I have seen. There was a birth in Poona (IGI again) in 1867 of a Mary Ann Bennett. But her father was a Timothy. Another one in 1866, father Henry. Elizabeth Begley's father was William Bennett. So I have a feeling this Mary Ann was a mistake, and was in fact Mary Jane. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello List, I am looking for information about my grandfather Ernest Abbott, born Nov. 28, 1875 in Mozufferpore, Bengal. His parents were Harry Edwin Abbott and Julia Ellen ( maiden name Vipan). Ernest married Constance Helen --- I need to get a record of marriage so I know what Constance's maiden name was; so far I have hit a brick wall. If anyone can give me an idea where to look, or is researching this side of the Abbott family, I would be most grateful. Shirley Barbur

I am particularly interested in the period 1790-1810, and to be very precise, would like to know what children did on their way to England to pass the time. But any tip will be useful. * I had interested myself in this area of British India travel when I was researching on my book:* "A match made at Madras:Margaret Maskelyne: [1735 -1817]: Lady Clive : Her life and times" *and found myself immersed not only in this form of sea travel but also in the life on board these ships that Margaret Lady Clive would have used: I found the following books and documents useful in the building up of a picture. The FIBIS Fibiwiki page Society Reading List http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Society_reading_list , section Women and Children details a book called Children of the Raj by Vyvyen Brendon 2006, although it may cover a later period than Frances is interested in. I have not read this book myself, but this link http://www.shelfari.com/books/1269733/Children-of-the-Raj does mention sea voyages: Drawing on memoirs, journals, and oral testimonies, Children of the Raj conjures up the brilliant scenes and exotic atmosphere of the Indian Raj through the rich narratives of the children themselves. Here, too, are accounts of journeys across perilous seas and the heartache of long family separations, as children were banished to chilly British boarding schools and grim holiday homes.
