Hello List A correction to my earlier email which stated that the baptismal entry for Earnest Abbott was unsubstantiated. It is on the "Old" Family Search Site. However when I look more closely at the link given by Noel, I see that it is in fact the "new" site which previously had beta in the URL, but which has recently changed and which I failed to recognise as the "new" site. Accordingly this entry is a transcription with a microfilm to back it up. Sorry for any confusion. Happy Christmas to all Maureen (Sydney)

Are the burials for Fort William documented anywhere? I have STACK and HUGHES family buried there.

Thanks, Peter I have been researching in Ireland. Thomas HUGHES married Jane Elizabeth STACK in India in 1851. They had several children born in India while Thomas was in the military there. They returned to Ireland about 1861 where they had 3 more children, 3 of their children migrated to the United States around 1880, Richard HUGHES to Maryland, Mary Anne HUGHES to Alaska and Joseph (b India) HUGHES to Oregon. It's the family in India I can't find - Margaret Theresa HUGHES, Catherine HUGHES. They had a daughter Ellen HUGHESs born, died and buried in India. Jane's mother died and is buried Fort William I believe. Peter wrote: I have a connection to the name Stack through my Pembroke side and suggest that you look at Ireland as a source. Hello List Shirley said: I have a birth/baptism registration for Thomas Ernest Abbott (b. Nov 1 1906) stating his parents are Ernest Abbott and Constance Helen. I really need to know what the marriage registry has for the maiden name for Constance, and who is listed as Ernest's father. If it is Harry Edwin Abbott, then I know I am on the right track... and Noel said in reply: An Earnest ABBOTT (note spelling) was born 28th November 1875 to Harry Edwin ABBOTT and Julia Ellen, and baptised at Mozufferpore, Bengal on 12th December 1875. Julia was Julia Ellen VIPAN. They were married 7th July 1870 at Calcutta. >From https://www.familysearch.org/ The Family Search entry for Earnest Abbott is unsubstantiated and therefore cannot be guaranteed in accuracy, indeed in my own family tree I have come across incorrect entries. However in this case the appears to be a good chance it is accurate, or that at the least there is some connection. The LDS beta site gives Mozufferpore as the place of baptism for Thomas Ernest Abbott. Searching the FIBIS database for Abbott and Mozufferpore gives the result (the link may not last permanently) http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/simplesearchsummarycat.php?s_id=432&sn=A bbott&fn=&f=&to=&t=Mozufferpore&c=&searchtype=0&tn=6 or http://tinyurl.com/2588dap This gives five children for H.E Abbott, sons in 1871, 26 July 1877, daughters in 1872, 27 July 1874, 1883, so from the dates another son 28 November 1875 is quite possible. There is a FIBIS Fibiwiki page Muzaffarpur http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Muzaffarpur with a link to a Fibiwiki page Indigo Plantation http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Indigo_Plantation This latter page has on online book "History of Behar indigo factories ; Reminiscences of Behar ; Tirhoot and its inhabitants of the past ; History of Behar Light Horse Volunteers" and in it there are mentions of H.E Abbott, one mention of E Abbott, and many mentions of Mozufferpore. On the LDS beta site I found a baptism entry for Constance Helen Newton who is female with the name Constance Helen and more or less the right age to marry a man probably born 28 November 1875 (she is two and a half years older). There also is no other marriage record for her on the LDS sites (beta or old site) Name: Constance Helen Newton Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 30 May 1873 Baptism/Christening Place: Bengal, India Birth Date: 21 Mar 1873 Birthplace: Bengal, India Father's Name: Ernest Augustus Newton Mother's Name: Christina Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C75023-3 System Origin: India-EASy Source Film Number: 499050 Reference Number: v 144 p 47 Due to the connection with Mozufferpore, perhaps Shirley could write to the Church group which would have the Mozufferpore church records for the Church where Thomas Ernest Abbott was baptised in the hope they may have a marriage record, which doesn't seem to be in the British Library Church records. If it was Church of England, the Church of England is now part of the Church of North India and Muzaffarpur appears to be in the Patna Diocese. http://dioceseofpatna.org/index.html gives an email address for the bishop. Many thanks to Maureen, Noel and Laura for your help. You make it all look so easy- I have lots to learn. Ernest was the 4th child of Harry Edwin Abbott. (Three of his six children died before age 1). Now if I could find out where my father Thomas Ernest Abbott disappeared after the war, this branch of the family would be complete. I know It will come together one day. Best wishes, and a merry Christmas, Shirley Barbur
Hello, List, Mervyn Richard POWELL was born in Madras, 06 Jun 1908, father Samuel POWELL and mother Amelia Herberta. Mervyn went on to marry Kathleen Mary FENNELL on the 24 Dec 1932, Ootacamund, Madras. It is thought that Kathleen POWELL was the informant of the death of Esther Susan Jane COPELAND who died in England. Esther was my wife's grandmother. I have a particular interest in Samuel POWELL and I would like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of this family. Merry Christmas to all. Len Buchanan kwljb@clear.net.nz

Just a minor correction to my previous notes on this man. The regimental number given to William when he enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers was STK 635 (the letters are STK and not STR for Star). He was later renumbered GS (for General Service) 47350. The notation STK was exclusively used for the so-called Stockbrokers' Battalion (see http://www.1914-1918.net/prefixes.html) thus proving that William enlisted in late August 1914, and must have been working in London at the time (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pals_battalion ). Noel
Chris, One of the documents you are quoting from is William's Medal Index Card. You can tell some things from such a card, but in the absence of any other records, you cannot tell everything. Starting from the top he first served overseas in the Royal Fusiliers as Private 635. The little red asterisk beside the rank of Private and then against the 1914-15 Star further down indicates that the rank impressed on the back of the Star was that of Private. It's not clear to me what number was impressed on the back of the Star, but it was either 635, or GS/47350. The next entry indicates that he served with the 10th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. The 10th Battalion was formed in the City of London in August 1914 as part of Kitchener's Second Army - it had the unofficial title of the Stockbrokers. In September 1914 it was attached to 54th Brigade, 18th (Eastern Division). In October 1914 it left the Brigade and became Army Troops in the same division. In March 1915 it was transferred to 111th Brigade, 37th Division. It landed at Boulogne (France) on 30th July 1915, and you will see that this date corresponds with the date on William's card (the theatre'1' indicates France and Flanders) confirming that he went to France with the 10th Battalion. At some stage he left the Royal Fusiliers, and he gained a Commission in the Indian Army on 18th December 1917. I have searched briefly for a record of the commission in the London Gazette without success, but the name Campbell is so common that I would need to spend some more time on it. As Lieutenant he was first placed on the General List of the Indian Army Reserve of Officers., and then he later served with the First Battalion of the 156th Regiment of Infantry of the Indian Army. His Victory Medal and British War Medal were impressed with the rank of Lieutenant and I think the VM will show the Army Reserve of Officers and the BWM the 156th Infantry Regiment. It looks as though the VM was issued by the UK, and the BWM by India. The notation in the column headed "Roll" is the notation of the medal roll held at The National Archives, London. William's VM will be listed on Roll Off170, page 58. His BWM is on roll IOf101A, page 132. His 1914-15 Star is listed on roll TP/75C3/ page 74. Rolls commencing with the prefix TP generally have more information that others. The other notations are some dates and refer to correspondence. As far as I am aware, no-one knows what these mean anymore, and the correspondence has been lost. On the reverse of the card is written 'Officer-in-charge, Military Department, Indian Officers forwards nominal rolls of officers, received from India. Entitled to 1914-1915 Star, and then (I think) despatched 23rd August 1922 (and to the Glasgow address shown further down). See http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Indian_Army#Reserve_of_Officers for additional information. If it were me my next step would be to obtain digipics of those original medal rolls at TNA. If you want any further advice on how you might do this may I suggest that you contact me off list? May I just add that it is generally helpful to provide information such as year and place of birth etc. etc when asking about army records, as these can all assist. Noel
Dear listers, I have been given some information regarding William Black CAMPBELL s/o John Kirkwood CAMPBELL and Margaret Ferrie CAMPBELL. The info states that William was in the Royal Fusiliers, 10 Royal Fusiliers, General List, Indian Army Reserve of Officers, 1/156 Infantry IA, Regimental Number 635. I wondered why he might have gone to India in the first place. On one of the pieces of paper I was sent it states he went in as a Private and by 18.12.1917 he was commissioned as a Lieut. He married in Scotland in 1921 (occ: Coal Exporter's representative) His father John was a Coal Exporter. Married Elizabeth Alice McLea. They were living in Glasgow at 2 Kelvingrove., which is on the Correspondence sheet. It says O i/c Mility: Dept. I.O. forwards Nom Rolls . Received from India of (looks like affairs) entitled to 1914-1915 Star d/ 23.8.1922 Any help gratefully appreciated Cheers Chris Aust.

Hello List Leonie said: I am currently research a Rochfort family, the head of which was one Marcus (Marius?) Rochfort. I have sourced from 'Poor Relations : the making of a Eurasian community in British India, 1733, some details of his teaching posts. Marcus Gustavus Rochfort was a teacher by profession and, at various stages of his career, he taught at the Upper Military Academy, and was headmaster of the PAI, from 1829-1830... I have checked the Fibiwiki, but can find no reference to the Upper Military Academy or the PAI. Can anyone tell me what the PAI was, and perhaps also something about the Upper Military Academy. PAI stands for Parental Academic Institution, Calcutta more commonly known as the Parental Academy. The following Google Books link, which is available from the FIBIS Fibiwiki page, Calcutta, http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Calcutta is from an article in the Calcutta Review called "The Educational Establishments of Calcutta Past and Present" ,page 457 http://books.google.com/books?id=-8KgAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA457 I believe the Upper Military Academy would be the Upper Orphan School which was run by the Bengal Military Orphan Society, and was for the children of Officers, mainly orphans, although there were a few boarders. I haven't come across this terminology previously however, but nothing else seems to have had Upper in its name. The FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Orphans http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Orphans Cheers Maureen (Sydney)
Leonie, I see that you have an interest in the Rochfort family in India. My father in law, Arnold Graham, was a friend of Hume Guildford Rochfort, b1890 at Hyderabad. Hume attended the Crystal Palace School of Engineering in London and qualified there in 1913 with the award of a gold medal being first in his year. Arnold also received this award when he qualified there the following year. They appear to have kept up their friendship in later years. I don't know if they knew each other in India but I assume so. I have been in contact with a number of people who have Hume in their family tree and I do have a few photos that may be of interest. I would be interested in making contact with you. David Railton
